Game Day : New Mexico St. @ Wyoming ....

I would reiterate that it was very clear today that we are not nearly as deep yet as some perhaps thought we were. I don't think Shyatt trusts anyone outside of the starting 5 and I don't either right now.

I think at about the 12 minute mark in the first half you could tell that Shyatt realized this was the first real battle of the year and subbed in the starting 5, from which point they never really left the game except for a few strategic breaks for players around the media timeouts and Cooke/Nance sitting the last minutes of the 1st half with 2 fouls.

He went all-in on Hankerson and Cooke both with 4 fouls with about 9 minutes left in the game. You don't do that unless you don't really trust someone to play those 5 minutes between the 9 minute mark and the 4 minute mark when someone with 4 fouls would usually sit.

It's early in the year so I would expect that as the year progresses the team will work itself out and there will be a trust developed as some players simply have to step up in certain situations. Or, I hope so at least, because otherwise we will be on the razors edge all year.

NM State put the blueprint out there, press Wyoming, force them out of their comfort zone and do whatever you can to get Nance and Cooke into foul trouble because there's not much behind them right now.

We definitely played subs less but they contributed to this win--we got good minutes from Herndon and Jason. And I don't think most teams can press as effectively as NMSU--and we actually, for the most part, handled it pretty well. I know I have my brown and gold glasses on, and I'd like to see a replay of the game, but watching it live it sure seemed like the refs were quick to whistle on us on defense and then swallowed their whistles when NMSU was on d. Still, a win, and NMSU wanted this one badly.

Ultimately, this was a big win! Wyoming looked a little out of sorts, but we still won by somewhat playing NMSU's style of game. I agree that this game will only make us better. Remember...this was one of the OOC games that everyone was worried about? We stepped up when it counted, and as far as the press, I thought we handled it fairly well.
Seemed like we turned it over often against the press?

Again....we only turned the ball over 10 times and many of those were charges. This being against a full-court, all-game press. I've seen much worse. We do need improvement, but were far from incompetent. Also, when we DO beat the press and it's 3 on 2, we need to push the issue.

so we actually turned the ball over on about 5-6 plays; take into account the fact that we also scored about 2-3 times countering the press, I don't think it was overall too bad. And I have to say that although sometimes I wonder about Grabau it was sure nice having the steady senior handle that press on the floor tonight--I felt most comfortable when we got it to him. And of course the senior knocks down free throws. Just about when I get to the point that I think we need to let a more athletic younger guy replace grabau, he turns in a performance like this when he reminds what he brings to the table.

I agree with your post, with the exception of Jason giving us good minutes. I felt like that he nearly killed us at one point. He cost us 4 points in 10 seconds with his half-ass rebound attempt that was easily put back and then the errant pass right afterwards. His job is to hit threes, of which he did not do for us tonight. He will only get better, but they should have pulled him sooner.

Yea, he did miss two threes that I can remember and it wasn't his best game. But he did get us one of those critical 50-50 balls there at the end ...

Just watched the game. Fucking thriller but frustrating.

Couple things here. Like someone else noted, NMSU just provided the blue print of how to beat Wyoming. But, if teams try and do what NMSU did, and they aren't talented enough, or hitting their shots, they will get blown out by Wyoming quick. Also, the bad news for other teams is that NMSU not only showed other teams our weaknesses, it showed our coaching staff our weaknesses. These things will be fixed.

Adams needs to stay out of early foul trouble. Sooner or later it will catch up.

Nance almost had a huge dunk. So close!

NMSU is going to beat a LOT of teams this season, and they play New Mexico and Colorado State. I am interested to see how those games end up.

We are finally talented enough to play run and gun with a good team, and win. Sloppy, exciting game but WE WON!

Pokes are 6-0! Bring on Denver and let's go play on the road for the first time this season, get to 8-0 and crack the Top 25!

Interesting that our first road game is in Texas, and our final game last season was in the CBI in Texas @ Texas A&M. I wonder if the players who played in that game last season will remember that terrible Texas road trip and want to redeem themselves.

Anyways, Pokes win, can't wait for the Top 25 rankings to come out so we can see how much closer we are.

NMSU was pretty effective at speeding up the pace at times with the press. The Aggies were even pressing off missed free throws today. Gotta give Menzies credit for his approach. My slight beef with the Pokes today against the press was that the floor spacing was poor at times and people were NOT coming back for the ball when a teammate got in trouble with the ball. That'll be corrected.

This was a good win against a good squad. NMSU is athletic, physical and aggressive. Pokes will learn and improve from this game. Shyatt played nine tonight. Not surprised by that at all. Keep grinding away.

This was a perfect test, we were just coming off games against bad opponents, and nmsu is a hungry, experienced and talented team. I think it's perfect because it showed the pokes and all of us that hey, there are other talented teams out there and that we are not invinceable. These are the type of character wins that we need and that I love! Id be suprised if Wyoming didn't come out with fire against Denver, all in all this was a tremendous win!!!

A couple things we learned.

We will begin to get everyone's best shot. We will no longer sneak up on people. They will be ready for the Pokes this year.

Our guards need to do a better job against the press.

Colorado isn't as good as everyone thought.

Nmsu is a very good team.

I honestly don't think we will break into the top 25 unless we go 10-0 at least but 13-0 would secure us cracking into the top 25 just like it did in 2012 with a much better SoS.

I disagree with those that say our bench is not as deep as we thought. It's the tough game time experience in games like this one that we were lacking, but 3 of our bigs (Sellers, Herndon, & McManamen) got quite a bit last night. They aren't quite at the level of the starters yet, but they kept us in the game and they all went to school last night. Lieberman also got a little, but was a bit overwhelmed with the pressure press - he only got in for 2 minutes. This is the kind of game that is going to help us in conference play.

This was a great game and one that we needed. We got the W! An important W too. How many times in the past have we dropped these kind of games? I think our experience is starting to show as this isn't a lot of our guys first major battle, and we pulled it out not even playing in our comfort zone. We won playing pretty far from our best ball. I'm loving how this schedule is ramping up in intensity at just the right times. Important for us to be humble, keep our edge, and not get too high on the hog.

Yes we have some flaws. Now us fans even know them. We're going to have to overcome the odds of teams with an abundance of athleticism/experience more then a few times this year with our grit and organization. This isn't anything new, we're just in much better shape then the past to pull this off now that we have a bench with some awesome seniors.

I respectfully disagree, We are just as deep as we thought we were which is still deeper than it has been in the past and Shyatt has faith in the bench or he wouldn't have played the bench so much yesterday. Sure the bench isn't going to have 30 min of game time but 3 bench players had 19/19/11 mins and that is still a pretty large amount.

I just wonder how many minutes Sellers, Herndon or Mcmanamen would have received if Nance , Cooke and Hankerson had not got into foul trouble? Also though the fact is those guys came in and played and kept us in the game while they were in there so that is good.

Honestly I believe it would have been pretty close to what it turned out but at different times.

Every time I read these threads the day after all I can do is roll my eyes. Bunch of freak outs and some of you are so quick to shit on our teams.

I think this was a good win actually. New Mexico St. plays New Mexico and Utep again this week. Would like to see them win both of those games. Also I think Grand Canyon was favored to win the wac but after seeing the results so far on the season I think New Mexico St. wins the WAC easy this year so we just beat another NCAA tournament team most likely. This win will look good come March and make us better.

So, you don't think Shyatt would have played those guys as much if the main guys weren't in foul trouble? Well, if the main guys weren't in foul trouble, we would have likely pulled away and had a big lead right? And if that's the case, then the backups would have been in...
