Expectations for 2009

IT IS VERY HARD TO RECRUIT TO WYOMING. ANYONE WHO DOESN'T REALIZE THIS IS IGNORANT. ALL WE CAN HOPE FOR IS THE LEFTOVERS AND A DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH EVERY NOW AND THEN.

Give me a effing break. Are you a CSU fan by nature? It is not hard to recruit to Wyoming, never has been. I am so tired of hearing that bullshit excuse. And believe me, I wasn't the only person pissed off when our beloved Joe Glenn barked that statement to the media on multiple occasions. Only losers make statements and excuses like that...don't get me wrong, I admire Joe Glenn as a person! It doesn't take a brain surgeon to figure out you can't live & die by Colorado "B" recruits (like Joe did) and expect to compete in the MWC. At Wyoming, you have to recruit the cold mid-west heavily...Michigan, Minnesota, Iowa, Ohio, Wisconsin, Illinois, Kansas, etc.

Damn that statement of how "hard it is to recruit" pisses me off. Bob Devaney, Lloyd Eaton, Fritz Shurmer, Fred Akers, Pat Dye, Bill Lewis, Al Kincaid, Joe Tiller, Paul Roach, Dana Dimel, and even Vic Koening never made such a rediculous effed up statement...and not all of them were winners at UW!!!!

I actually agree with you McP, as I previously stated. Obviously Wyo probably won't entice lots of So. Cal or Florida players, but neither do the other MWC, or most of the Big 12, Big 10, etc. Its like anything else, just have to use a little common sense, and sell the positives of Wyoming, rural, friendly, safe, mtns, open space, relative location to Denver, athletic facilities, etc, etc, etc. Plenty of recruits and parents of recruits will find those things enticing. If not then thats fine. Recruiting is as much an art as a science anyway. Its more about finding the right pieces that come together to form a masterpiece than it is about just getting a bunch of recruits that are ranked high by rivals.com or scout.com.

I would compare recruiting to UW to recruiting to Boise St (CSU may be more relevant, but I want to compare to a good team). A lot of similarities, other than they have been consistent winners. If we recruit hard, players will come, if we start to win consistently again, players will come more easily. It has been done in the past, it can and will be done again. Gotta sell some game changers early on with playing time, system, facilities, etc, then winning will help down the road. I don't see any reason we can't get recruiting classes similar to Boise St, and with good coaching, that would be enough to compete for MWC crown.

Calhoun (good coaching) and AFA would dominate with the talent TCU (good talent) has, and if he continues winning he may get that kind of talent in the future. Hopefully, DC and the Pokes can beat him to it, AFA has its own special recruiting challenges as well.

I'm not going to comment on the recruiting, because that is a subject with tons of variables. But as for coaching, I'm not sure what scheming the supporter of Glenn is referring to? Especially the comments about Nebraska? Offensively, this team failed 6 years straight. Six years of turnovers is coaching. The elementary plays we ran were coaching. The hiring of Bob Cole, and subsequent continued offensive failures were the perfect proof of Joe Glenn's problems. Cockhill was fired because the offense was terrible and Glenn didn't know how to fix it. He brought in Cole, which further showed his lack of knowledge in D1 offense. Cole was even less creative and intelligent than Cockhill. Joe Glenn is not schematically prepared for D1 football yet. I'm not sure where Joe Glenn really focused, but Im thinking his approach was sort of a manager/administrator type of approach. The only problem there was he didn't assign responsibility very well when it came to the offense. This was all painfully obvious when listening to post game interviews. Glenn's summary of what went wrong every week was painfully simple and pathetic. I just fear that practice each week was too similar to those conferences. "We are fumbling too much... so Devin and Wynel... you guys should stop that", or "We are throwing too many INTS, so Karsten, please start throwing it to the WR's, not the defense. I can't stress enough how much better it will be if you do that".

I think Wyoming Football has moved in a better direction.
