Eleven and Two

11&2 Iis what I thought too. Thought we might lose to CU and pull of one of these so after the CU game I got my hopes up but still right back where I thought we would be. A lot of basketball left.

I did as well (I even thought 10-3 was on the table), but I am still disappointed due to the following:

1. OOC SOS - the schedule turned out much weaker than I thought it would be. CU is not nearly as good as I thought they would be, and we played SMU, Cal, and NMSU all when they were missing one of their top players. That not only made those games easier but it has hurt those teams overall so they will not be as strong in terms of helping our SOS as I thought they would be. Also, the "cupcakes" on the schedule are even worse than I anticipated. Southern/Montana St/Stetson/FAMU are a combined 3-28 against D-1 competition. Brutal.

2. Regression - This team isn't playing the same as they were earlier in the year. I have speculated on other threads about the reason, but I don't really know.

3. MWC SOS - The MWC is very down this year. Weakest the league has ever been. This will not help our SOS.

Long story short, I thought before the season than an 11-2 OOC would put us in position to chase an at-large. I think there is pretty strong evidence now that is not the case. I think the Pokes would have to run away with the MWC to get an at-large and I just don't see us playing at that level right now.

Good points...

Having thought about it a bit - do you think the fact that we only play starters for 20 - 25 minutes in the majority of our games, that when the competition dictates they play more minutes, they can't get their shit going?

McPeachy I have been saying this for a while. We are simply not a deep team. Sure a lot of guys have played a lot of minutes against cupcakes, but to me it was really evident first at the NM state game. That was our first battle and I could tell Shyatt was not looking at the bench whatsoever and he basically played roulette with 2 starters with 4 fouls from the 9 minute mark onward. We're going as far as the starters go for right now. We are sorely missing a proven veteran scored off the bench ala Sobey last year.

I don't think we have a lot of contributors behind the starting 5 right now. Hopefully they develop over the season but I think right now Shyatt, and I don't blame him, doesn't trust anyone outside of the starters when the rubber hits the road.

A) We certainly DO NOT miss Sobey. He was not a reliable asset to our team and we would not be sitting any different if he was here.
B) I agree that we don't have anyone off the bench right now that is truly a point contributor. But lets also be realistic, we really only have 2 starters who can actually make their own shot, Nance and Adams. Grabau, Cooke, and Hank all are good players at their position but do not strike fear into anyone. Teams have figured out that if you take away Nance and Adams, you take away all of our creativity and production. You look at the SMU game and the game last night. Both had sub par, if not awful, games and we struggled. Nance played ok but his performance was way worse than it could have. He easily could have taken over the game, demanded the ball every possession, and abused Cal's interior defenders. Why this wasn't a priority surprises me.
C) I was thinking the exact same thing this morning, that our starters have played so sparingly most the season that once the full game slaps them in the face, they struggle. I wish Papa Shy would have scheduled a road game against a lesser opponent before SMU and Cal. I think our young guys are overwhelmed on the road because every time theyre on the road its against a team punching them in the face.

Just my $0.02

We shit the bed against SMU and Cal.

We hold a team to 15 at halftime and lose.

Should be undefeated. If we knew how to run an offense away from Laramie we would be undefeated.
