Depth Chart

Depth chart was released today.

Some surprising starters on the defensive side of the ball…surprising to me at least.

Evan Eller appears to be our new starting MLB. He came to Wyoming last year from VMI and recorded two tackles in four games before declaring a redshirt year.

Jones Thomas looks to be our new starting free safety. This is his third year at UW. Did not see the field at all as a true freshman and redshirted. Saw limited game time mostly on special teams last year.

Gary Rutherford is listed as 2nd/3rd string at the WILL position. This was a guy that was mentioned multiple times by Sawvel during fall camp as standing out. Now he appears to be looking at mostly a backup role. Kind of weird.

Sawvel also mentioned Samuel ‘Tote’ Harris at RB as being ‘really good’. He didn’t even make the three deep.

I’m not sure if this is a smoke and mirrors depth chart, but I was a little surprised by some of the names. If I remember correctly, Sawvel also didn’t have Durr even listed on the initial depth chart at WR last year and he ended up seeing a decent amount of time anyways. On the bright side, Svoboda did not make the depth chart at QB. I half expected to see him listed there as third string or something.

I anticipate we’ll see all of these guys throughout the Akron game. With true competition in practice, coaches will need to analyze them based on an opponent other than their own team. True pecking order may not be evident until week 3. Which isn’t a bad thing. If we truly have depth, then it makes the whole team better. That’s something we haven’t seen as fans for quite some time in some of these positions. I’m hoping that the Akron and UNI games are not even close and these guys can gain momentum 3-4 guys deep. Hoping… last year does not repeat itself.

Also surprising to me was two Safeties starting that were on the team last year. For a position that was a liability I surprised not to see transfers in those positions

Svoboda will start over Gyllenborg. Sawful has to follow his instincts. 🤣
Without Wilson at TE teams might be able to keen in on plays based on personnel...we have heard about Evan's ability to catch the ball but not a ton of mention of blocking outside of Wilson and Erb.

Yeah, not ideal. But I guess both have big time speed when healthy. Hopefully something has clicked for Johnson and Thomas

Sawful will have a direct line to the old bald coach, asking or taking advice
Man....If only that were true. In 7 consecutive (non covid shortened) seasons, the old bald coach never won less than 6..and that was only once. I think the Bohl years will be looked at as the good ole days if Sawfull is what I think he is.
