Could a 4-2-5 be a good fit for Wyoming?

I think we can all agree that this year was a major let down defensively. Finishing 98th overall defensively was excruciating to see. I was at almost every game this year, a lot from the pressbox and I watched our defense very closely. After watching it compared to some other defenses this year I am certain Wyoming could benefit from a 4-2-5 scheme. Just hear me out here. I am a very defensive oriented fan and I miss that 2006 team that terrorized teams with the 3-4. I think the 4-2-5 would allow Wyoming to excel in our conference. You look at what TCU and then Boise State (even though they've gone to more of a 3-4, 5-2 look recently) have done with it.

Here's a good look at Gary Patterson's schemes and defensive playbook. Not to mention this great article with videos about how TCU's defense works. The froggies have had one of the best defenses in the country and I am convinced that it would be a great fit UW.

I'll echo some good points on why switching to this scheme can be good for us.

1.) It fits our size agenda. We're not that big of a team defensively but we do have some pretty good athletes on the field. This would allow us to put more speed out there. Will linebacker plays more of a strong safety.

2.) Our safeties don't have to be relied on so much in the run game. As long as they could tackle in the open field if a run did happen to break through, they could focus primarily on stopping the pass.

3.) It's got alot the same principles of the 4-4 scheme. Almost every coach has run a 4-4 at some point making the transition pretty easy.

4.) Lastly it simplifies the linebackers duties. They are responsible for their gap and that's it. No tricky realignments.

With the offense finally finding some rhythm this year, if the Pokes can step up their defense for next year, I feel like we be serious contenders. We have a ton of offensive talent returning and I think they're going to explode. If we had a stingy defense to go along with it, Wyo could be a very scary opponent for anyone. I'll be interested to see what adjustments are made for Spring ball.

I think everything depends on what you've got talent-wise. I don't think forcing a defensive stategy on players that can't adjust works. A good coach will evaluate what he's got and design the defense to fit.

IMO, not at all!

We have seen that it is difficult to recruit size (on the DL) and speed in the secondary. Wyoming has always been able to find that hard-nosed kid whose nose is always around the ball (i.e. linebackers). Biezuns and Knapton should have been outside linebackers the entire time. I think we should be 3-4, but obviously Christensen is going to have his way. A lot of blame fell on English, but when you are forced to play a scheme without the players to run it, what are you supposed to do.

If we ran the 3-4 this year, I don't think we get run over by Uah State and Temple so badly.

Actually, we ran some 3-4 schemes this last year, and got absolutely ran the fuck over every time except against Texas State. We just do not have a guy that can be a noseguard right now, and that is THE key to the 3-4 defense.

Personally I love the 4-2-5 with the 2 lbs and 2 ss that can shift around to different forms as more of a strength D.
And I love to be able to run the nickel type where ya have 2 lbs and 3 cbs 1 free 1 strong as the more speedy group.
And y'all might not know what I'm talking about but at least I know what I mean.
Another U I watch has been 3-4 for a few years now and it's really working out well. It's become a faster D too.

And Texas State....check out their recruiting class as they are getting ready to move up.

y'all've gotta lot to think about. I just wanted to say y'all've. Don't confuse it with y'olive. ;)

Both DC and English wanted the switch to the 4-3 (English ran a 4-3 scheme at at Northern Colorado as their D-coordinator). They had to switch to the 4-3 in year two of the DC era because they had no players that could step in as 3-4 lineman (Stover's career ended because of injury and Marc Felker transfered down to DII).

I like the 4-2 scheme, but isn't that what we basically ran the last two years (you can call Ghally M. and Luke Anderson linebackers all you want but they were basically a third safety on the field). I think running mutliple defensive sets for certain situations works best, and I hope our new d-coordinator has better luck doing that than Marty.

Obviously as much as you watched you didn't watch too closely or you would have noticed we were in a 4-2-5 most of the season. Geez. Great idea. They just listed Anderson as a LB but he was the fifth DB.

And no English didn't want to go to a 4-3. He preferred a 3-4.

We went a bear look a lot this year but never a true 4-2-5 like I envisioned.

Here's a look at Michigan's bear defense

And what we used against Temple a lot

Then we have the 3 down linemen with 2 outside backers look from earlier in the year. Straight up 3-4
