Cooper Rothe

He had a great freshman year and if he improves year to year we should have a solid kicking game for the next three years.

Did not realize Yaussi was coaching him. That's kind of awesome. :)

Also didn't know Rothe played CB in high school. Hope he'll never need to make a tackle, though.

He'll get better, but I don't see him having a huge leg. I think he'll be a darn reliable fg kicker from 40- maybe 45 yards (which is perfectly fine). I don't think we'll ever get 50 yarders out of him or touchbacks out of the endzone.

If he can't kick touchbacks consistently I would like to see us get a kickoff specialist

His leg will get stronger as will the rest of his body in the weight room. I think he will only get a stronger leg.

If I'm not mistaken, I think he popped a few 50 yarders in high school. I think, with some training, he would hit from 60 in the thin air of Laramie.

I am under the impression that you can't really increase your kicking distance. It's like arm strength. You either have it or you don't.

Maybe I'm wrong..

I thought it was more technique than raw strength? I've never actually kicked a football, but for soccer I probably have the hardest shot on a team of fitness freaks (plus me), and I don't do any leg workouts aside from running.

There's at least one tackle I know he bailed on

He did great as a freshman. I remember him getting some flack here at the beginning of the year but he bounced back and had an excellent season.

He was perfect on extra points and only missed 3 FGs.. as a freshman. We couldn't ask for a lot better and he never cost the team a game.

He missed a few more than that early in the season, but the 2nd half of the season he was as good as anyone in the MWC. There were a couple misses in 3 point losses, so who knows how those games could have ended up, but those games also had interceptions, fumbles and defensive break downs, so these losses could hardly be dropped at Cooper's feet. I say we're in good hands for the next 3 seasons. He'll increase his leg strength and more important his leg speed, and he'll only be better.

He was 3-6 in the first two weeks, but finished the year going 10-13 in the last 12 games.

Of course you can increase kicking distance. Just like golfers can train to hit the ball further. It's all about exercising the fast twitch muscles. Raw strength lifting will not increase distance. In fact, I always caution kickers to stay out of the weight room.

Plyometrics, Especially doing a kicking motion in a pool will reap benefits to the fast twitch muscles. Also resistance band training, parachute sprinting, and core training will all help.

Rothe will be a productive kicker for Wyoming for one reason alone... He has the head. I could tell from the first game he has the mentality to get the job done in game situations.

Even though in the first two games he was not good at all?

The kid was a little rattled doe exactly 1.5 games. Pretty good for a Frosh. He could have stayed in the dumps the whole season

I agree that he was good as the season went on. I was just touching on the sentence saying he could tell from the first game that he had the mentality to get the job done.
3/7 in the first 2 games including missing 2 game winners in the first game.
Could have won it in regulation and won it at the end of 1st OT.

That is certainly not getting the job done.

The rest of the season, very good yes. But to say he had the mentality in game 1 is just not true.
