Conference Realignment

We fill cuz it's a fairly small stadium, there's not much else to do and our fanbase hasn't truly given up on a scrappy product (yet)...D1 is truly a joke anymore and doesn't mean what it used to!

Murray is spot on with this crazy idea to add schools based on the media reach in the area the schools. Sac State’s school university president claimed that the FBS would have access the their large media market. They never one Big Sky Football title when they were in the Big Sky and the attendance at the games were so poor they had to have music concerts after the games to get people to attend. These schools that are in large media area’s like Chicago and Sacramento have so many other alternative athletic events they are competing with. The Cowboys, similar to the Cats and Grizzlies are the pro teams for Wyoming and Montana.

If you are old you remember UTEP in the WAC days. Fred Reynolds, Tim Hardaway, Wayne Campbell, Tiny Archibald, Antonio Davis, Jeep Jackson. In the heyday of Wyoming basketball, UTEP won 5 straight WAC titles. As a fan you had total respect for UTEP. There is a certain nostalgia to being a Wyoming fan during that time. UTEP was a huge part of it. Remember when we played the WAC tournament at the Marriott Center in 1988. UTEP took out BYU in the semis and probably the highlight of my Wyoming fandom we chanted "where are you - BYU?!!!!" at the Mariott Center. We took as much joy in seeing UTEP win that semi final as we did in winning ours. I honestly don't think Wyoming could have beat BYU in the final. UTEP was just a tougher team for BYU.

As Wyoming struggles to maintain relevancy it's easy to relate to UTEP's struggles.

I think part of it is Wyoming and UTEP were both as part of their history NCAA champions in basketball. I realize it is a stretch but it is something the programs shared which made them unique among the teams in the conference when they both were members.

I would rather have teams from Texas than Montana. Recruiting purposes mostly. Don’t add just to add, be strategic and thoughtful about the locations that can help our conference as a whole. Hopefully we wait for the tv contracts to expire and see what shakes out. We might just end up back with the defectors after all. Minus the smurfs.

I think we will. I am confident in that Oregon State and Boise State will not be in our conference alignment future. Although I admit I have no idea what'll happen to Fresno and San Diego.

I want Texas teams for football credibility and the fact that they'll spend money on football down there. If Montana and MSU would spend the money to enter FBS and the MWC, they'd be here.

Which Texas Schools? Not all Texas are created equal. In fact the next up and coming school in Texas, Tarleton State, which is building facilities like crazy to move up to FBS in the next couple of years. Who is also ranked #1 in the FCS currently had a home attendance last week around 11,000.
Montana State has been recruiting in Texas for 15 years. Last year the 2 starting D back’s for the Cats who were true freshman, came from Texas. 1 now plays for UCLA and the other 1 for Indiana. Wyoming can recruit Texas but like anything it about relationships.

If you get a kid from Texas it’s because he was overlooked by UT, T A&M, Tech, Baylor, TCU, Houston, North Texas, etc. Odds are he isn’t that highly rated. If he is a diamond in the rough he’ll be gone after one good season. The current state of NIL and transfer rules have ruined it for G6 and FCS teams.

North Texas, UTSA, are the main two. Recruiting the state and playing games in the state is where they differ from the Montana schools in my opinion. And factor in TV market- eyeballs. I’d go after current FBS schools first.
