BYU coach Mendenhall creates controversy with comments about own fans
Criticism of fans is usually saved for the opposition. Brigham Young coach Bronco Mendenhall has taken the opposite approach.
Bronco Mendenhall could be getting more criticism from Brigham Young fans about his comments. During his weekly press conference, Mendenhall was asked a question about quarterback Max Hall's propensity to turn the ball over. The senior has eight interceptions in four games.
Mendenhall said there will always be more focus on the mistakes at key positions, like head coach, quarterback, cornerback and offensive tackle. But he has learned that is part of the deal with Cougars fans and their expectations.
Then he made this comment:
"If you are just to look out and say 'where are the mistakes,' the level of criticism usually matches the level of education ... and from the fans and from the people it comes from. I've learned not to take it personal and I tried to help Max do the same."
To hear the entire clip of Mendenhall's comments in full, Mountain West Connection has it on their site.
The broader context to what Mendenhall said is that you have to understand what is going on and why the mistakes are being made. Coaches certainly have a better understanding than fans. That is true. But when you distill down his quote, it can be interpreted differently. It did not go over so well with some of the critics.
Salt Lake Tribune columnist Gordon Monson has called on Mendenhall to issue an apology to fans. He wrote this particularly insightful paragraph in his column:
"The problem with some coaches, good and bad, is they periodically become paranoid. The world is out to get them. They either become so sensitive and insecure about any kind of criticism or they insulate themselves from all its forms, even when hearing it would do them good."
