Burman pulls the trigger?

In the short term it's my opinion that this boondoggle of an administrative conundrum (I'm trying to be nice) will benefit and embolden the status of our AD, Tom Burman.

I also could be completely wrong - however - for the time being, I feel that with the Sternberg commissioned report now in his hands totally and exclusively, Burman will now have singular autonomy and discretion that he would not have had if Sternberg had stayed on board.

My theory is that Burman will want to show that he is not tone deaf to the situation (the rancor, the disgust, the disease that continues to fester in regard to the football program), and this will allow him to make moves in the athletic department that will affect other personnel - but not him...at least not in the short term.

Provided the Pokes get blown out tomorrow and lose big at Utah State (I'm not even conceding they''ll win against Hawaii) I think that Burman will pink slip Dave Christensen at the end of the season and bring aboard another coach.

On the other hand I think this situation would be totally different if Sternberg had stayed on in Laramie.

Burman would not have had the complete autonomy he now possesses -- and advocating for a regime change in the coaching staff would have forced him to justify to Sternberg why he should be able to make such a move while sparing his own position.

Bottom line is that this ugly scenario has worked to the favor of Burman in my opinion - and if he wishes to pull the trigger on firing Christensen, while also maintaining his own position...he now has that opportunity.

The only question is will the funds be there to pay Christensen for the final year of his contract, pay for the replacement coach, pay Sternberg his negotiated settlement next year, pay the deans their separation settlements, pay for a consulting firm to search for replacement deans, coach, and new president. The hole is getting deeper and deeper.

I don't think he will. The interim President and BOT were pretty clear in their message that they want things to settle down "for the time being." It certainly sounds like they wouldn't want to deal with the headache of overhauling the football program at the present moment. Unfortunately, I would guess DC is safe now even if we lose out and get our butts kicked in every game.

DC should probably stay before Burman does. Burman has proved incapable of making good decisions in the money sports. A new AD needs to make the hire for football, otherwise TB might hire a Heath Schroyer football equivalent.

I would think it is completely the opposite. Burman is now free to ignore the review and there is no one to hold his feet to the fire. The only silver lining I see is that DC's seat just got a whole lot cooler and maybe that means he can bring in a quality Defensive Coordinator. That's a BIG maybe though.

gets my vote..get a good DC in and get this corrected....although I still wonder about the locker room.

Burman will not be able to pull the trigger so to speak. He is hamstrung by the big payout it would require. Having already conceded the payout money to Sternberg the BOT are not going to authorize another huge payout only to invite more drama. No CDC is safe for another year. I would think that Burman may be on the hot seat however not knowing what his contract looks like I can't speak to a buyout clause. It all boils down to money......I don't see the University doling out the cash it would take to fire the head FB coach and replace the entire staff. What is more likely to happen is the hiring of a big name DC to try to help the program.

It won't matter if Christensen brings in a good defensive coordinator as the offense sucks now also.

Plus Christensen basically calls all of the plays for the defense anyways since no play can be ran without his approval.

Wyoming football is screwed.

This isn't true.....He has a key part in scheme discussions but game planning and game calls are made by the Defensive Coordinator. I am not arguing the fact that it will fix anything, just saying that I don't see them cutting him loose.

Burman and CDC, IMHO, will stay at UW until they completely destroy the department to where beating a Division II school will be cause for celebration.

UW is screwed beyond repair.

Just to note about the situation of the locker room it seems to be very good still. Listening to players in interviews and talking to them on campus he has definately not lost them at all. They still seem very confident in DC and in what they do here.

It hasn't changed.....none of them like him, they don't respect that fact that he thinks he is better than everyone, fact is they call him "KING CHRISTENSEN", but they think he knows his shit when it comes to calling plays and being an offensive coordinator. It is what it is, all the players want is to play football and they really could care less what most everyone on this board think. The last game there was a case where a drunk fan was calling him out and teh football players all had DC's back. That is just the way it is when you spend every waking moment with someone you tend to support what they say and what they do. Bottom line is that he has not lost the locker room nor the players.

I think you have to let Dave finish his contract. Main reason: Money. If Dave continues to coach as he has, he is only shitting on his own career, as nobody wants a loser. He would be best to try to get another job right now, as I'm sure he must know he is gone (unless his narcissistic personality disorder prevents him from realizing it). The University could agree to let him move on without penalty.

Why not let him finish out at this point? Save some money in the midst of the turmoil that has enveloped the entire school so we can continue to make poor decisions.

Does it really save money to keep CDC? How many quality coaches in the MAC, sun belt, and conf. USA make over a million per year? Not many. CDC's buyout is cheaper than paying him a million per year. His buyout for the rest if his contract doesn't equal his yearly wage. I think we need to find a current head coach who already has an established staff.

The reason why DC stays another year is that Tom Burman stays another year.

Exactly. Burman isn't pulling the trigger on anyone. He and his buddy Dave are going to have a merry Christmas knowing they are both safe for at least another year.

DC does not make anywhere close to a million a year. He makes close to probably 3 or 400k a year. His base salary is only around 183k and the incentives can make it up to 1.2 million a year.

My mistake I had heard the details described wrong to me, thanks for the correction.

With the turmoil in leadership at UW, it's not the time to fire DC.

Stabilize the President and BOT first. Have them evaluate the athletic department and proceed from there.

DC will not coach at UW beyond 2014 and the crater he leaves behind will be even bigger next year than it would have been this year (we will see a lot of attrition this offseason and recruiting has been very poor), but it's more important to get the right guy and we need stable leadership in place to build a structure to attract the right coach and give him the framework he needs to succeed.
