At the beginning of the 2012 season the only thing that I was thinking about Dave Christensen and Brett Smith was that we would have 3 more years of seeing Brett Smith play at the War and Dave Christensen had the Wyoming football program headed in the right direction. How wrong could I have been!
First of all, Dave Christensen basically shot himself in the foot with his outburst against Air Force, even though I think that it was justified given what the Air Force coaches did, but even so that was a huge issue and Dave Christensen put him self behind the 8 ball after that incident. It appeared that Christensen lost the team this last year as he became so detached from the players and the fans and if you don't win that is like signing the death certificate by a coach.
Brett Smith I was looking forward to watching him shatter every QB record at Wyoming and his senior season would be truly very special and one that every Wyoming fan would remember. Well we know now that he has decided to explore his future in the NFL and more power to him. I don't have anything against him for doing it, but Jason Thompson is a different matter. He proved out to be less than an upright and honest person and showed that the only thing that he really cared for was himself. With those personal characteristics he found the right school for himself at Utah and after this coming season and the whole coaching staff at Utah is fired then he will realize what a horrible mistake he made by transferring and losing another year of eligibility.
But this brings me to my main point, Wyoming will now have 6 QB's on its roster for next season and considering that Coach Bohl is changing Wyoming from a Spread Offense to a Pro Offense I think this could spell difficulty for several of those 6 QB's that are presently on the team.
Next season Wyoming will have the following QB's on its roster as of today:
Tommy Thornton 6-1 205 So.
Aaron Young 6-2 208 So.
Colby Kirkegaard 6-3 205 Sr.
Austin Fort 6-4 210 Fr.
Nick Smith 6-4 212 Fr.
Pete Thomas 6-6 236 Sr.
My gut tells me that some of these QB's possibly change positions and another will maybe leave Wyoming. I don't see Colby Kirkegaard going anywhere and he will probably be a back-up this season and then he will graduate and be on his way. Tommy Thornton is not a Pro Type pocket passer and I see him ending up changing positions and/or going to another school. Pete Thomas will be here only one year and will either be the starter or the primary back-up IMO. Aaron Young will be the other of that tandem, and will either end up being the starter or the primary back-up as well this coming season. Then comes the two young freshmen who I think are the future at the position and I would be surprised if I didn't see one of them be the starter his redshirt freshmen season. Either way, I see a lot of competition and at the QB position and it will sort itself out during these spring drills and the fall camp and either way I see a lot of changes in the make-up of the QB position. One last note, I am not sold on Aaron Young like maybe some others, but he might surprise me, who knows. The bottom line it will be good competition.
