Air Force has plenty to prove heading into conference opener

A losing season is especially damaging when you don't see it coming.

Heading into the 2013 campaign, the Air Force Falcons didn't have any reason to expect the worst. Troy Calhoun's six seasons as Air Force's head coach had resulted in six bowl appearances.

Maybe the Falcons weren't winning the Mountain West Conference every year, but they'd find a way to scrape out seven or eight wins regardless of their experience or personnel. Right?

Not so much.

Air Force right tackle Sevrin Remmo says there’s no typo next to his name on the roster. He does, in fact, weigh just 240 pounds.

“That’s right,” said the 6-foot-3 Remmo. “It’s probably a little under that most times.”

Air Force’s line in general has grown larger. Center Michael Husar has said he’s over 285 pounds. Left tackle Matt Rochell is at 270, left guar Patrick Noyes is 270 and right guard Andrew Ruechel is 260. These sizes pale in comparison to most college offensive lines, but it’s a departure from even two years ago when Air Force didn’t have a player listed over 265 pounds on its roster at the Armed Forces Bowl.

Honestly, that's about the size of Montana's o-linemen, other than the 240lbs guy. Our DEs and even some of our linebackers are bigger than that.

Wyoming fullback Drew Van Maanen impresses in first college game

You probably didn't hear Drew Van Maanen's name much on Saturday night.

In Wyoming's 17-12 victory over Montana, the redshirt freshman fullback started, but failed to receive a carry. Most of those went to Wyoming running backs Shaun Wick, D.J. May and Brian Hill, who combined for 248 rushing yards.

But remember that five yard touchdown run in the third quarter by Wick?

There is a good chance that when fans on Saturday night watch the Air Force-Wyoming game, they might be fooled thinking they have found themselves back in the 1970's. In an age of high flying passing attacks, the Falcons and the Cowboys employ run first, pound and ground offensive attacks.

Air Force is motivated far more by the collective 2-10 season than it is any particular game, though the Wyoming loss was certainly a low point. The Falcons also haven't forgotten about the postgame activities of two years ago or the Cowboys' band playing in the middle of the "Third Verse," the song Air Force sings following each game in front of the cadet wing to honor fallen airmen.

The University of Wyoming and Air Force football series has all the makings of a good rivalry.

There is the relatively close proximity of the two schools — about three hours apart.

There is history. Saturday marks the 53rd game and the 35th consecutive year the two have played each other.

The series is close. Air Force leads 27-22, with three ties.

But what makes a good rivalry a great one? Drama or, by some accounts, controversy.

There was the long celebration - one that drew an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty - after a hit on a kickoff that knocked out Falcons returner Anthony LaCoste with a concussion. There was the on-field talking throughout a 56-23 drubbing. And, most searing, there was the playing by the Wyoming band in the middle of the singing of the third verse of the "Air Force Song," a postgame tradition for Falcons players and the cadet wing in honor of fallen servicemen.

"They seemed to display some disrespect for us," said Falcons right tackle Sevrin Remmo, who called the playing in the middle of the third verse "pretty angering."

Anthony Lacoste had a concussion from "the hit"? I call bullshit, Howdy had him back in the game running the ball the next series. Typical Airforce Pimple Faced Pukes in Blue making shit up.

On-Field talking? I was in row 1, 30 yard line, behind the UW bench - and the on-field talking was coming just as much from the Pukes in Blue than the Pokes. That is, until UW went up 49-17 after 5 minutes in the 3rd. Then for some reason, AFA decided to keep their mouths shut.

Wyoming band playing in the middle of "Third Verse"? If it happened, I wasn't aware - and I sure wasn't aware that all visiting fans needed to be quiet at the end of a game at AFA (for an undisclosed amount of time). Further, those fine Cadets that are so loyal and upstanding shouldn't have been throwing shit at our bench the entire game (without repercussions).

Last, if you want to point at events that led to where the series is today, it all started with the AFA coaches telling Dietz (actually yelling and motioning him down) to take a knee on the field after he bounced up from taking a hit in the 2012 game, giving them extra time to run a play without using a time out. That was chickenshit, and typical Howdy Doody.

I wasn't at the game last year but I agree wit hwhat you said. In the early years of DC we were always very respectful of the AF song traditions. We ould even go over and stand behind them in silence during the osng as a sign of respect. LAst year apparently we didn't do that but I doubt the it was an intentional F you from the band director to start playing in the middle of the song. Most likely a mix up. Even if it was so what get over it.

As to the 2012 incident. It seems people always screw up what happened(not saying you did McP, but Gags did in his article today). It wasn't just that they had the starting QB fake an injury so they could put in the backup and take time getting him ready. That wouldn't make sense to remove the starter for a cold backup. But what happend was the starter got his helmet knocked off the play before but put it back on right away and tried to stay in. The refs saw his helmet come off so he had to leave for a play. He started running to the sideline and that is when the coaches told him to act hurt and go to his knees so they had time to get the backup ready.
