For Wyoming, defending option offense requires discipline, awareness

The triple option is a numbers game.

In many pro-style offensive schemes, the defense accounts for 10 players, while possessing 11 of its own. This allows for what Wyoming coach Craig Bohl calls a "free hitter" to roam and possibly make up for a gap error or busted coverage.

When playing against these systems, the quarterback is a deliveryman, and little else. Maybe he'll take off on a designed run every so often, but his legs aren't a consistent, legitimate threat.

There are statue-like quarterbacks, and then there are the more mobile variety that are all the rage in today's game.

AFA and its fans are like 5th grade girls...they describe every bad thing or slight that has happened to them in their life and paint a picture that suggests rampant disrespect and abuse. Did our band screw up by playing during the third verse? Yes. I was there. They played. They shouldn't have. It was a mistake - not intentional. There seems to be an assertion that DC (and thus UW) was running to the sideline after the drubbing on the field and asking for the conductor's baton to, just at the wrong moment, strike up the band to "slight" the Falcons. Did. Not. Happen. And even if it did, DC is gone and you won't find someone with more class than Bohl. Why even talk about it now? That's right - simply to cast aspersions and attempt to cover an ass-kicking extraordinaire and white wash it with talk of being slighted.

In terms of the concussion from the hit - if that is the case, Calhoun should be reprimanded because he was playing several plays later as has been mentioned.

I used to respect AFA and their toughness and what they stood for. With Calhoun at the helm, they have become a paranoid, thin-skinned program. The next thing I expect to hear is how wrong it was for Paul Roach to come from behind and beat them in 1988...and that because Randy is still part of UW athletics we are rubbing it in their faces that we beat Dee Dowis and DeBerry.

I have been to A LOT of visiting stadiums and even been treated like garbage in some places - but, other than those rat bastards at CSU, don't hold any grudges or speak ill of those schools based on that experience. I forget about it and look forward to the next game. In general, I have found that those that are motivated by anger and bile don't get very far.
 
Wyoming-Air Force game has gotten heated recently (WyoSports.net)

To say Wyoming and Air Force don’t like each other right now might be an understatement.

But do they respect each other? That might be in question, as well, after the last couple of years.

There was the Dave Christensen incident two years ago, where the now-former UW coach confronted Air Force coach Troy Calhoun immediately after the Falcons’ 28-27 win in Laramie, accusing Calhoun of the unethical practice of having a player fake an injury to get a free timeout late in the game.

Last year at Air Force, the Cowboys pounded the Falcons 56-23 in a game during which UW’s Nehemie Kankolongo knocked out an AFA kick returner with a helmet-to-helmet collision that resulted in Kankolongo being suspended for a game. It ended when Wyoming’s band played during Air Force’s “Third Verse” song to honor fallen servicemen after the game.

Denver Post: Air Force, Wyoming seeking a 2-0 start

Eddie Yarbrough has bought into being a Wyoming Cowboy.

The junior from Grandview High School in Aurora has been a welcome addition to the Wyoming football team. He's already been an all-conference defensive end in the Mountain West, and now he's helping new Cowboys coach Craig Bohl rebuild the Wyoming program.

"We're going to saddle up and go for the ride," Yarbrough said of the team's path ahead.

The Cowboys took a good first step last week with a 17-12, season-opening victory over Montana in Laramie. But they had to come from behind to win. Their next step comes Saturday night when they host Air Force.

Ramsey: Air Force requires victory on this march to Wyoming

Air Force's journey to Wyoming will define the 2014 season. Yes, those are big words.

This is a big trip.

Air Force players made a collective decision to embrace the agony of last season. The Falcons don't require outside reminders of how astoundingly awful they were in 2013. They constantly remind each other of this futility.

The proper attitude is there, in abundance. We'll see Saturday night if the talent and poise are there, too.

"I'm really excited about it," safety Christian Spears said of the trip to Laramie. "It will be a big statement, whichever way it goes."

The Falcons should win this game.

I'm not sure how he believes that Air Force should win this game, but the rest of his article is pretty spot on. Conference games are always big, but this one is pretty massive for both teams.

Wyoming, Air Force set to write next chapter in budding rivalry

What constitutes a rivalry?

In college football, is it only a rivalry if both sides acknowledge it as such, or if one team refuses to say the other's name aloud? Is it a rivalry because the media declares it so, or the program owns a shrine in its athletics office dedicated to memorable victories in the series?

Do both teams have to share a state or a region to make the blood really, truly boil? How about a trophy? Or can one incident -- a buzzer-beater, a fight, a brash word uttered at an enemy's expense -- provide the spark?

I wouldn't consider AF a rivalry game. I think they have gotten soft and hypersensitive.

Calhoun is one of the most smug @ssholes I have ever seen. No wonder him and DC had a Springer moment. Both pompous pricks.

Keep trying to find fodder AFA. Call it a rivalry all you want, but all I care about is winning the game. Don't give a Falcon turd about your team otherwise.

Wyoming-Air Force football notes and quotes

–Air Force has modified its offense some over the years from a true triple-option. Make no mistake, the Falcons are option-oriented, but run a lot of those concepts out of different formations and blocking schemes. But it is still option football. “We appreciate Air Force’s commitment to sticking to their guns,” Bohl said.

–Bohl said he got a pretty good pulse of his team in about the second quarter of last week’s game with Montana. “We have good physical skills, but I wouldn’t say we have great physical skills. … For us to be very good this year, we’re going to have to become a more physical football team. I thought we got off to a good start (last week), but we have to be a little more assured in what we are doing.”

Key players in Wyoming's conference opener against Air Force

Wyoming

SHAUN WICK. Wick proved to be the ideal running back in Wyoming's power offense last weekend, rumbling to 134 rushing yards and a touchdown in the victory over Montana. In the last two season, he has shown the ability to keep churning his legs and shrug off tacklers. Plus, he's stronger than ever this year. The Falcons will key in on the run, so Wick will have to break plenty more tackles on Saturday.

Air Force

JACOBI OWENS. Owens announced his candidacy for Air Force's go-to running back last week, amassing 233 rushing yards and 10.1 yards per rush in the victory over Nicholls State. The speedy sophomore will receive plenty of opportunities to repeat that performance in Laramie on Saturday. As the running game goes, so goes the Air Force offense. And right now, Owens is carrying the load.

Five storylines to watch in Wyoming's conference opener against Air Force

1. Who will establish the run game? This is the big question. Air Force has always leaned heavily on its run game, and that was the case yet again in its season-opening win over Nicholls State. Meanwhile, Shaun Wick and D.J. May provide a formidable power-speed complement in Wyoming's backfield. Both teams will aim to establish the line of scrimmage and wear its opponent down. The side that can do this more effectively will likely win.

Wyoming running back Shaun Wick uses doubt, adversity as motivation

Shaun Wick runs through pain.

Back in 2011, Wick -- now a 5-foot-10, 212-pound junior running back at Wyoming -- was a two-way star for St. Bonaventure, one of the top prep football programs in California.

While playing outside linebacker in the first half of his final regular season game, Wick collided with a ball carrier, and his momentum whipped his right leg violently into the body of another player.

"I felt it, but I didn’t think it was anything serious,” Wick said on Monday.

Bob's side notes: Wyoming vs. Air Force: A time to end the ugliness (WyoSports.net)

A Wikipedia-type definition of the football rivalry between the University of Wyoming and the Air Force Academy might very well reveal the following:

“A long and distinguished Front Range football rivalry built on mutual respect between two schools with the same level of talent and physical attributes, and exhibiting a blue-collar work ethic.”

That’s the way it was for 54 years … then it turned ugly.

It started in 2012 with Air Force’s 28-27 come-from-behind victory in War Memorial Stadium in which the then-1-4 Cowboys lost a 27-14 second-half lead.

Cowboys football jumps into MW play by hosting Air Force (WyoSports.net)

Last week saw many firsts for Craig Bohl and his University of Wyoming football team.

Today is another: the first Mountain West game as UW (1-0) hosts Air Force (1-0) at 8:15 p.m. at Jonah Field at War Memorial Stadium.

“Every week gets a little bit bigger,” said Bohl, whose team defeated Montana 17-12 in during the Aug. 30 season-opener in Laramie. “Nothing builds success like success. It’s another opportunity for us to take another step forward against another quality program that’s gone to a lot of bowl games.”

Air Force played in six consecutive bowl games before the 2013 season, which ended with a 2-10 overall record in which it went winless in conference play. The Falcons enter the game on a nine-game conference losing streak dating back to 2012.
