Air Force defense presents defensive challenges for Cowboys

Every time Wyoming plays Air Force in football there is talk about how unique the challenge is to go against the Falcons’ option-based offense.

That’s the case again this week as the Cowboys and Falcons open Mountain West play against each other Saturday night in Laramie.

But Air Force’s defense poses some challenges to Wyoming’s offense.

“They have a three-man front so they like to bring different linebackers from different areas,” senior quarterback Colby Kirkegaard said. “They do some unique things, so we have to take that into consideration. It’s more different than anything, and also more challenging for us going against a team with a traditional four-man front.”

One more thing,....

I am going to like Brian Hill. Guy has a bounce to his step.

Here's a little Brian Hill for you. Solid looking backup to May and Wick:

I lost coverage towards the end of the Root programming after the mid 4th qtr.
This guy is one tough hombre. My disappointment is give him the ball 2 more times and score. I love this kid.
damnit.

Just realized, looked at the depth chart and MAN we are really senior laden on the defensive end, I think its 9 seniors we start! That is a lot!

I think that means if they continue to mesh we can have a special defensive group! Now lets get the offense going!

Big game this weekend, cant wait!

Troy Calhoun noticed that, too. Let's hope the defense can terrorize Pearson and Owens Saturday night.

He's going to be a good one. Not enough footballs to go around for May, Wick and Hill over the next 2-3 years, I think. Will be interesting to see how Brian is utilized.

Was a nice run. Not trying to be a debbie downer, But Let's not get to carried away. It was one carry on a beat down defense expecting up the gut runs. Would like to see more if we get up on AF though.

A beat down defense that had an extra hour of rest, though. I seriously hope we wear everybody down like that.

POKE FAN...you said there aren't enough footballs to go around for Wick, May, and Hill for the next few years, and I think you just opened up my mind to an idea.

Some teams have great running games with the 3 headed monster.
Wick is established. Give him the most carries. DJ May is a vet, give him the 2nd most. Hill is the new guy, give him the 3rd most. If the O-Line holds up and opens up holes, those 3 dominate everyone.
Next year, even more domination. Then May is a SR and Hill is a JR, then by then there can be a new 3rd guy.

3 headed monster in Laramie. Just need the oline!

The coaches watch the kid every day. Bohl says Hill has a bright future. Bath says Brian is one of the most intelligent players he's ever coached. Hill had the best stats in the fall camp scrimmage -- including a 47-yard run. Hill has the respect of the upperclassmen, according to Wick.

One carry, but he showed what he could do on an important 3rd & 4. Lots of reasons to be high on #8. Hope he has a chance to get some quality time against AFA.

Bohl has stated a few times that he likes going with two backs during a game. Hoping for some good O-line play so maybe all three can get quality carries on a consistent basis. The way D.J. has been getting nicked up, Hill just may get more time than expected. Who knows. Three quality backs is a good problem to have, though.

I had thought about this too, so I looked into what Bohl and Vigen have done in the past. They've never really went with a three-back system.

The most a third RB has gotten in the past five years is the 47 carries Chase Morlock got in 2013. That's more like what I expect from Hill if Wick and May stay healthy. Somewhere from 3-4 carries a game.

Stratton relishes role for Cowboys during Air Force week (WyoSports.net)

Sam Stratton considers this a fun week.

Not because he’s the holder on extra points and field goals for the University of Wyoming football team.

And not because he is a backup quarterback and arguably the team’s emotional leader, always encouraging teammates with his quirky sense of humor and singing abilities.

It is fun for Stratton because this is Air Force week, and he’s the scout team quarterback.
