I guess the state is going to match it? Nice!

I hate this massive downsize to a low-level capacity facility. We talk about accepting mediocrity. Removing over 1/3 of the seats in an arena that is already only the 4th or 5th largest in the new (smaller-gym) MWC is the epitome of aiming lower in my opinion. I do not care how many additional meeting rooms we will be able to replace seats with. In the end, 8,000 will become a massive crowd rather than slightly below acceptable for a non-rivalry game.

What is the capacity of Storey Gym in Cheyenne? Does anyone know? What about the Casper Event's Center?

I had really hoped that the new administration would put the kibosh on this downsizing.

I refuse to call this downsizing a "renovation" That term is hiding the truth and trying to make it seem like an upgrade. In reality, it is just throwing in the towel and saying that the late 1980s will forever be the highest the program can ever reach in terms of marketability within the state.

So let me get this straight, you would rather have a half empty gym that hasn't been touched up in decades, with ZERO modern electronics and an awful video board way out of the way, than a arena that is mostly full, with Wild Catter type suites at the very top and a drop down big screen?

When the AA is finished, it is going to look amazing. 12K is a pretty big crowd, plus it will be LOUD with the way it is going to be built. The noise will literally bounce off the glass from the suites and back down into the gym.
It will be classy, comfortable, loud, and overall a NICE, 21st century facility, instead of a MASSIVE empty hole in the ground.

Last I saw capacity is going to be about 12,000. That's the same as SDSU and they seem to do all right lately.

Did anyone else hear the Burman interview when he said they should have the fund raising for the second phase wrapped up by next July? That's pretty quick. Regardless, there shouldn't be a delay in construction. Phase one starts in March. Phase two will start the following year in March. We should be beautified in two years.

That will help fund raising for basketball as well, so maybe we're looking at a half million more for the basketball budget.

This. The A-A renovation is great news for the University of Wyoming.

The AA is a dark cave, with 1980's amenities. I'll gladly give up 4000 seats that get used once every 5 years to turn it into a modern facility. What's the other choice? Tear it down and replace it.

Coach Joe told me it should be around 13k when its all said and done with pull out seating that will put students and fans at the edge of the court

they're not going to 8,000, last I saw they were going to like 11/12 K.

The number I saw was closer to 10,000 than 12K. That is not much bigger than Moby Gym and is a reduction by 1/3 of the maximum possible ticket sales in a best-case situation. In my opinion, bringing our highest possible ticket sales goal down to 10K people maximum, really is aiming for mediocrity.

I also noted in the plan that they want to put a cafeteria for the athletes in the new sports complex in order to get them away from the student body. If one of our problems is lack of student support, I do not see how further removing the players from the rest of the students will help generate student ownership of the University's sports teams. When I was a student, one of the reasons I went to games was to watch friends and classmates represent my school. (Of course, unlike some people, I did not have the heart to boo my lab partner.)

My proposed solution would be to limit the amount of addition office space, etc. that we try to shove into the area and limit our downsizing to things that really are necessary.

When the program is performing at a high level, we do not need flashy electronics. If we are really successful, the band is playing Ragtime Cowboy Joe and the crowd is on its feet making so much noise that the opposing coach and players really are afraid of what is going to happen next.

They aren't going to 10,000. You're listening to the old farts club with that number. It's 12 K.

I've always heard 12k and frankly, who gives a shit if it's 10k. There's 300 people there tonight. Can't stand you whiners who complain about any changes

You want to limit ourselves to the worst-case scenario? Aim low, I guess.

There were like 5k last night.

We've had this argument in another thread back when the renovations were announced, but to recap: bigger is not the way forward with modern indoor arenas. The overall in game experience is more important. If you don't believe me, why don't you go check out the capacity and design of Oregon's brand new arena. Yes, Oregon, a program of unlimited resources and ambition, built an arena with 12,364 seats.

I think foolishly thinking we can and will fill that 15K humungo place is that living in the past crap.
We never fill it so why are you complaining about taking it away?

It will be so much nicer, and appeal to so many more people.

Do u own an 18 wheeler? No? Probably a pickup right?

Your reasoning is dumb! U seem to be fixated on a capacity being some sort prestige factor but having a large capacity isn't prestigious if they are never filled. I'd rather have a renovated arena than having thousands of empty seats for 99.99% of the time

You do realize that that 12,364 for Oregon is an upgrade from The Pit and it's 9 to 10,000, right?
People sure do bust out the narrowmindedness here lately, "who cares if it's 6,000 or 12,000, let's try to get 8,000 in there this year"
"Who cares if it's less than 10,000, we had like 300 people here last night"... Seriously, we had 4,486. And that was during Christmas break.
Seriously, some of you act as though you would rather have a gym like AFA's Clune!!! Capacity: 6,000, we'd be close to selling out every game!!! Give me a break!
I think we had 2 games over 8,000 last year, if I'm not mistaking. SDS and Colorado? Shoot UNM, CSU and Boise were all at or close to 7K.
Everyone seems to forget about the recent mess that we are two mediocre years out of. Before Schroyer, we were getting 7 to 10K on a pretty regular basis. So give it some time and stop the complaining. The better the team does the more the fans will want to be there. Just think, our attendance has gone up well past Schroyers best year.
Stop the complaining and don't give Burman any ammo to make the capacity less, I'm sure he gets his best ideas from these boards... Listening to old people with money...
