8000? 12000? Who gives a shit. Let's worry about getting 6000 in there once this year....gopokes1399 said:they're not going to 8,000, last I saw they were going to like 11/12 K.

I hate this massive downsize to a low-level capacity facility. We talk about accepting mediocrity. Removing over 1/3 of the seats in an arena that is already only the 4th or 5th largest in the new (smaller-gym) MWC is the epitome of aiming lower in my opinion. I do not care how many additional meeting rooms we will be able to replace seats with. In the end, 8,000 will become a massive crowd rather than slightly below acceptable for a non-rivalry game.
What is the capacity of Storey Gym in Cheyenne? Does anyone know? What about the Casper Event's Center?
I had really hoped that the new administration would put the kibosh on this downsizing.
I refuse to call this downsizing a "renovation" That term is hiding the truth and trying to make it seem like an upgrade. In reality, it is just throwing in the towel and saying that the late 1980s will forever be the highest the program can ever reach in terms of marketability within the state.

Did anyone else hear the Burman interview when he said they should have the fund raising for the second phase wrapped up by next July? That's pretty quick. Regardless, there shouldn't be a delay in construction. Phase one starts in March. Phase two will start the following year in March. We should be beautified in two years.
That will help fund raising for basketball as well, so maybe we're looking at a half million more for the basketball budget.

The number I saw was closer to 10,000 than 12K. That is not much bigger than Moby Gym and is a reduction by 1/3 of the maximum possible ticket sales in a best-case situation. In my opinion, bringing our highest possible ticket sales goal down to 10K people maximum, really is aiming for mediocrity.
I also noted in the plan that they want to put a cafeteria for the athletes in the new sports complex in order to get them away from the student body. If one of our problems is lack of student support, I do not see how further removing the players from the rest of the students will help generate student ownership of the University's sports teams. When I was a student, one of the reasons I went to games was to watch friends and classmates represent my school. (Of course, unlike some people, I did not have the heart to boo my lab partner.)
My proposed solution would be to limit the amount of addition office space, etc. that we try to shove into the area and limit our downsizing to things that really are necessary.
When the program is performing at a high level, we do not need flashy electronics. If we are really successful, the band is playing Ragtime Cowboy Joe and the crowd is on its feet making so much noise that the opposing coach and players really are afraid of what is going to happen next.

You want to limit ourselves to the worst-case scenario? Aim low, I guess.

We've had this argument in another thread back when the renovations were announced, but to recap: bigger is not the way forward with modern indoor arenas. The overall in game experience is more important. If you don't believe me, why don't you go check out the capacity and design of Oregon's brand new arena. Yes, Oregon, a program of unlimited resources and ambition, built an arena with 12,364 seats.
