A student in my class...

In one of my classes yesterday, this weekends coming game got brought up and I was really disappointed by a student in my class.
He was talking about going to the game and someone asked him who we are playing.
He said I don't know, I'm sure we are going to lose to whoever it is.

Then some girls behind got pissed at went on a rant..."Are you kidding me? We almost beat NEBRASKA, we have Brett Smith so we are going to be really good this season and we are playing Idaho who is terrible and we beat them last season, and by the way Nebraska was ranked #18 in the country and it is really hard to beat Nebraska at home and we had the ball only down by 3 at the end of the game we almost won, we are going to be good this season!"

First of all, it bugged me that some people didn't even know who we were playing.
And it really bugged me that the kid just assumed we were going to lose to whoever we played and assumed we sucked.

But it was cool to hear the girls go off on the kid. There is some passion within the students, but not as much as their should be.

Along with that, I've got a friend here at UW who claims to follow college football yet he thinks we suck, and doesn't even know who Brett Smith is, and doesn't know he is good.

I try and make claims for people, but seriously, just one BeaverPoke isn't going to convince the entire student body.

We need more passion! Maybe a couple big wins in a row will help...

15 - 25 years (depending on who you talk to) of mediocre to shitty football will do that to a fanbase.

And for the kid who said we would lose - sounds like a loser himself, one of those misery loves company, always likes to be negative about everything type of jackasses.

I hate the negative about everything crowd as well.

It does kind of relate back to what I was talking about on the attendance thread. There is a huge percentage of fans that have no idea who our coach is, what offense we play, who is on the team, & etc. The bad part is I feel that this has always been this way, at least starting in the early 90s.

To play devil's advocate, we do need more people who plan to attend games without regard to who the opponent is. Last year's 4-8 record does support an assumption that the team will be more likely to lose than win--especially given ignorance of the opponent's identity. In the end, the student was planning to go to the game because Wyoming is playing and not because the opponent is Idaho or someone else.

Geez, maybe the kid likes to play Dungeons and Dragons while eating Cheetos in his basement. Who even knows if he likes or follows football.

Beav, I hope you punched him in the face.

Go Pokes!!

This. Exactly. And it pisses me off.

I was at UW from 97-2004 (Don't laugh, I got a graduate degree as well!). And I watched excitement slide and apathy increase every year. It started to pick up a bit in Glenn's first year, but was more of the same after year two and three.

The only fix for this is winning. Often. And big. We need to hang 60 on Iowa on Saturday, and then another 60 on UNC the following week. Without some big wins soon, it's just going to be more of the same. All these kids have heard for 10-15 years (at least) is "Wyoming sucks." That's not going to change until we win. A lot.

I can't wait until that day comes.

GO POKES!

Ignorance is bliss, as such if you are ignorant you cannot be held accountable for saying something stupid. In his case his ignorance just got him one hell of a tongue lashing from some women.

Iowa? Don't you mean Idaho? Big difference!

If the Pokes hang 60 on Iowa tomorrow the entire nation will be shocked. Particularly since they're playing Idaho. :D

I get what you're saying. It's going to take a lot of winning to get people to stop assuming that Wyoming is a loser.

Yes, Idaho. Fingers aren't keeping up in the middle of the rant.

Though it would be great to hang 60 on Iowa as well. :D

GO POKES!

While it's easy to point to a recent history of poor performance and mediocrity, I think you're just seeing a manifestation of the mindset of our population in general. These two people you cite above are reflective of an otherwise ignorant society. These are the same people who can't name the Vice-President of the United States, but they sure as hell know who Miley Cyrus is. The guy who thinks he knows so much about college football is the same guy who has opinions on everything from politics to movies, but if you ask him about the Bowles-Simpson Commission or what he thinks of the Coen Brothers you'll get a blank stare.

People say I'm cynical but I don't believe a word the lying bastages say...

Maybe he was really flirting and playing dumb and wanted someone to give him some private lessons in how to play tackle football.
Is he hot?

That kid is an idiot. It Is OK if you are not into football, but to talk shit on something you know nothing about is stupid. I am glad they chewed him out.

Same type of person that makes negative comments about politics, religion, co-workers, and family without all or any of the facts. I can't stand these people and I'm glad I can avoid most of them.

Sorry wyovanian... you made my point before I finished my post.... I started it, then finished an errand and when I was done saw u beat me to it. Agreed, same type opines on everything with or without knowledge and is usually negative.

Not too surprising......students tend to be the worst kind of fans, especially with this generation. There are very few BeaverPoke's who latch onto their schools team with pride......but there are tons of 18-24 year-old guys these days who all root for the Patriots, Heat, Yankees, etc.....you get the idea. Not real surprised the guy was ignorant about the current Wyo team. At best those kind of kids go to the games only because that's the place to be.

Unless the team is winning or a traditional powerhouse. The Texas', A&M's, Nebraska's, Florida's, USC's, Tennessee's and Oklahoma's of the world tend to not have this problem, even in down years. Students wait in line for days to get tickets, wouldn't dream of wearing another school's gear to a game (I've seen that at the War/AA), and become die-hard alumni.

A lot of that comes down to winning traditions, but a lot of recent/big wins will bring the fan base around a la Boise State.

It's something that can be changed at UW, we just need to start winning. A lot.

GO POKES!

Tennessee?

At least they were called out! I agree with everyone else, it is very annoying when someone comments negatively on something they know nothing about.

We've sucked since the kids attending UW were toddlers. It's all they know.
