A student in my class...

I agree with J-rod on this one. I spent sometime on Mill ave in Tempe. Saw a lot of kids wearing ASU gear. Also saw a lot of kids wearing oregon, Texas, Notre Dame, Michigan, Florida, and even a ton of Arizona gear. Pretty dumb. I remember students wearing Air Force and Nebraska gear while I was attending UW. I was once even asked what college team I cheered for. That person was surprised that my only team was UW, and that I didn't cheer for a so called major team.

It is kind of like Colin Kapernic wearing a Dolphins hat, or Justin Bieber wearing every possible sports team gear. Most people today pretend to be fans, or wear stuff for fashion.

In one of my classes yesterday, this weekends coming game got brought up and I was really disappointed by a student in my class.
He was talking about going to the game and someone asked him who we are playing.
He said I don't know, I'm sure we are going to lose to whoever it is.

Then some girls behind got pissed at went on a rant..."Are you kidding me? We almost beat NEBRASKA, we have Brett Smith so we are going to be really good this season and we are playing Idaho who is terrible and we beat them last season, and by the way Nebraska was ranked #18 in the country and it is really hard to beat Nebraska at home and we had the ball only down by 3 at the end of the game we almost won, we are going to be good this season!"

First of all, it bugged me that some people didn't even know who we were playing.
And it really bugged me that the kid just assumed we were going to lose to whoever we played and assumed we sucked.

But it was cool to hear the girls go off on the kid. There is some passion within the students, but not as much as their should be.

Along with that, I've got a friend here at UW who claims to follow college football yet he thinks we suck, and doesn't even know who Brett Smith is, and doesn't know he is good.

I try and make claims for people, but seriously, just one BeaverPoke isn't going to convince the entire student body.

We need more passion! Maybe a couple big wins in a row will help...
We've sucked since the kids attending UW were toddlers. It's all they know.
Not sure how you define "toddler", but we were pretty good from '94-'98.

I was 4-5 in 1994. A lot of the kids in UW are 18-23.

O.K. how's this for depressing.....I was 14 years old the last time Wyoming football won a conference title outright (1988). And that was 25 years ago.

True and that sucks. We did share the title in 1993 and won the Mountain Division in 1996 (almost beating BYU's best or second best team ever). We had chances under Dimel......fucking Tulsa among others.

This is the year to get back on top. The opportunity is there.

Which means they were 3-8 in 1998. Whatever, I think most people are more ignorant than most bright, hopeful folks would really prefer to believe. I also think the majority of people are either incompetent or apathetic in their lines of work. The majority of progress and production in the world is through the efforts of the minority of its populace. Otherwise we'd be able to book Saturnian Ring cruises by now...

" 'The more I read and the more I listen, the more apparent it is that our society suffers from an alarming degree of public ignorance,' O'Connor said.

"That ignorance starts in the earliest years of a child's schooling, she said, but often continues all the way through college and graduate school.

"O'Connor argued that learning about citizenship is just as important for American children as learning multiplication or how to write their names."

We were 8-3 in 1998.

And two of those losses were at the end of the year. We had a Vegas Bowl invitation waiting for us if we beat AFA but we didn't so....

Read the context, 3-8 was in reference to the ages of students currently enrolled.

I get your guys points, and I totally agree.
To me, I totally understand if you don't like football or sports in general, that's fine. You aren't expected to know anything.
But to people that think they know what's going on and don't know B-Smith is a bad ass, or know DC is the coach, or know ANYTHING about our team, it's like...come on doucher.

I follow sports a lot, but I am not going to talk about our girls soccer team and say "It doesn't matter who we play, we will probably lose". I don't know anything about the girls soccer team so I don't pretend to.

I here this kind of stuff all the time. They have seen/heard of so many losses that they just assume Wyoming sucks. Some were raised in small towns in Wyoming, and by the time your a teenager, most people think Wyoming sucks (I liked Wyoming in my teens, but moved out for a few years in my 20's). I think TV is partly to blame for this. The cool stuff is what happens on MTV, then you are college age, then you start to figure things out.

I think the new President is on board with improving our athletics. Article below.

I wouldn't worry about it. If we can start winning some games, have a fun product on the field, support from the administration, then things will turn around.

We have sucked more than not the past decade (at least). 2009 and 2011 gave us hope, but otherwise, suck. So that would be the point of reference for the general student populace of Wyoming. Other than opinionated assholes like us on this board, or the hard core followers of college football, most people (this classmate for instance), will just think "Wyoming lost again". Let's face it, we're 0 - 1, we lost, we suck. Until we start stringing a couple seasons together, that is what the opinion will be. The classmate you're referring to is correct in his thoughts. Maybe not with the potential of this exact team at this exact moment, but from the data he's collected, on purpose or accidentally, over the years, he's correct. He's not alone. There are a lot of "professionals" putting us at 5 or less wins this year. I don't think they all have the same opinion today, but only a week ago, it was the majority.

Let's hope the boys can start changing the attitudes of the casual student starting today.

Kids are like this at every school. There's maybe 15-20 schools that every kid is consumed with the FB team.

That said, the kids who love UW while students are the ones who make it special and are the guys you will fly to home and road games with throughout your life.

I've seen more student support these days than when I was a student 2005-2009.

Winning will cure a lot of this. When I started school, I was not a huge fan. I didn't really follow the Pokes or anyone else. I pretty much rooted for the Denver Broncos and that was it. The cowboys hasn't been to a bowl in a decade and weren't expected to do anything since their coach had left them the previous spring and the athletic director couldn't find a replacement so he was going to coach them himself. My RA told me to wait until basketball season since we usually win those. I didn't even go to the first home game which was against Air Force but the Pokes surprised everyone and beat them. After that there was a buzz on campus and I didn't miss another game if I could help it. For those of you who haven't picked up on it, the year was 1987 and the Pokes went 10-3 (8-0 in the WAC) that year. That started a lifetime of fandom for me. This year feels like 1987 all over again. I know it's early, but we haven't exceeded expectations like this in a long time. We have both an offense that can score and a defense that can stop people. That student just might become a fan before it's all over.

I didn't even like Football until a friend dragged me to my first game. It was October of 2003, and the opponent was a bunch of turdburglars from crazyville, USA with a Cougar mascot. Final score: Wyoming 13 - Douchenozzles 10.

I was hooked.
