500 grand for a QB

This is why I suspect that it would require splitting out football and men's basketball into some university affiliated entity that is considered separate from the university but still has university associated branding. This would allow for football and men's basketball to operate under a different set of rules and regulations as professionals, while allowing many (or at least some) of the other sports to continue to operate under an amateur model directly through the university.
And then cut a ton of women's sports, since they would wildly outnumber men's scholarships if this happened.

Back on the NIL/QB front - I'm sure $500k is on the low end for a QB. From what I heard, we paid JMG $400K to stick around for his Sr year.

Wow, that’s insane. Seems to be more justification for not donating to NIL if that’s how money is being allocated and spent. $400K to a tight end? How are you not better off giving $50K to 8 different players?

He finished his Wyoming career with a total of 80 receptions, 1023 yards and 7 TDs over 4 years…Dude certainly has NFL 6th round/UDFA athletic potential but he will likely never make $400K again anywhere.

Can we really feel bad for a key defensive player on a 10-2 Notre Dame team who had 3 INTs and 2 TDs on the year including a long reception TD fake punt play as opposed to his other option of playing on an awful 4-8 Wyoming team with a lack of decent coaching?!?!

Kid is giving himself a shot at an NFL career and is on a big stage. He clearly made the right choice betting on himself to take a walk-on spot at Notre Dame over a scholarship spot at Wyoming coached by Sawvel.

Correction - He had 3 INTs and not 2 this year.
Feel bad, that he doesn't get to play in a bowl game, yes. Yes we can. ND is who ND is.

Our problem is our HC Sawful is in over his head. He probably wasn't the best DC, because C. Bohl was a DC by trade he probably helped Sawful out.

But Wyoming wont get better until they get a new HC, he can't coach the boys up that is the problem and has been the problem since day 1 of his hire.
I've felt like Burman was in over his head from they day he got hired. 19 years later i feel like that's been validated, but Wyoming continues to pay him an outrageous salary as the overall performance of the department continues to slide downward. It's the most amazing thing, i have never seen it with any other business or organization in the world.

I find this really hard to believe. 400k for an often injured, semi productive tight end? What was Harrison Waylee getting? And who makes these decisions?
I had read that the CU transfer qb from Liberty who played against us, Kaden Salter, got 700k for 1 year. That's a lot of dough but Liberty was undefeated until their bowl game in 2024.
I googled Arch Manning's NIL. He gets 3.5 million. It is reported that his NIL dropped by almost 1/2 due to his on field performance, or lack thereof. So it seems NIL is laden with incentives and is not guaranteed no matter what. So I wonder if JMG really got 400k for his mostly invisible impact this year.

I believe the coaching staff typically directs who to pay and how much at Wyoming . Which, this makes it much more believable to me. Given what we’ve seen in terms of game management, I fully expect Sawvel to spend $400K on a tight end if you told him you have a total NIL budget of $750K.

A lot of schools are creating general manager positions that do a lot of the evaluation and payment analysis.

Wyoming hired this guy in May (after J-Mike decided to stay and take the money at Wyoming):

I just don’t understand why teams are so clandestine when it comes to NIL money? O
If we even donate a single dollar, we deserve to know where it’s going. It feels like a scam to me.

The entire concept of NIL is being distorted and used to mean something entirely different from what the intentions were.

NIL was never supposed to be about college players being paid to play a sport. It was supposed to be about them being allowed to capitalize financially on their personal brand/name secondary to them playing a popular sport. Athletes are supposed to do something (appear in a commercial, sign autographs, make a post to social media, etc) in exchange for financial compensation from a private company or individual. Instead, we have coaching staffs dictating to NIL collective which players are paid what amounts and the people funding the NIL collectives are basically allowing them to do that.

I would assume that I could contact the 1WYO collective and tell them I want my $10k donation to go to a specific player and what I expect in return for that (maybe 100 signed footballs or something similar). That's how it is supposed to work. So part of the blame lies directly with the people donating their money to NIL. They are essentially just giving the money free and clear and not stipulating where the money goes.

I'm guessing there are several reasons. First, if all the students and fans know what a player is getting, it might put a lot of pressure on that player to perform. Another reason: The coaches will come under scrutiny for paying players won't don't live up to expectations.

If we want to win more games, we need better players. Fire all the coaches you want...if we don't have better players than the other guys, or at least as good, we're going to lose more often than we win. (And, by the way, nobody who can coach worth a damn is going to come here until we assure him we're going to buy the level of players he needs.)

This is not 1978. The old bullshit is gone...and by the old bullshit I mean recruiting 17-year-olds who become indentured servants for 5 years while we give all the money to the adults who have the hallowed job of teaching kids how to run around with an oblong ball on grass and crash into one another. That's over.

If we don't want to do this...that's fine. We'll be able to hang, maybe, only with other teams who won't do it either. We just have to find a league of those teams, and it's sure not the one we're in.

This is pro sports, and if we want to have a team in this pro sport...well, you get the point.
I honestly don't understand this post. It isn't 1978...totally agreed. No kid has ever taken any field as an indentured servant. But most were given an education (to schools they could never have gotten into without athletics) along with all the other "perks" that came with opportunity to play college athletics. Obviously, advertising has long since driven salaries and its where we are today.

In 1978 Terry Bradshaw made about $200k annually. He was second highest player in the NFL. Inflation adjusted, that is about $780K to $950K today depending on the model. How many mediocre NCAA quarterbacks will make this (who will never play a snap in the NFL)? It is all so broken and messed up and its coming to a high school near you.

I don't care if I am the last holdout. I don't support changes to college athletics. I absolutely believe that the money earned from athletics should be used to support the institution. Not looking to quibble over it. If some kid doesn't want to play football...don't (try that as an indentured servant). If you want to play for a team, get an education, and create incredible memories....play.

Wish my daughter who helps mentally disabled people while getting her doctorate could sign a NIL deal. Zero calls this month but the transfer portal opens for medical students on Monday. Just so ridiculous.

I realize you can’t turn back time but I really miss the days when college athletics was just an opportunity to get an education. If you were somehow good enough to make it to the NFL, great! When the concept of NIL, was first brought to our attention it was explained like this: if the Brown and Gold store sells a jersey with number 17 and the name Allen on it, Josh should get a cut, which he wasn’t allowed to do at the time. That made sense to me. What NIL has turned into doesn’t.

So tired of horsecrap like this. In 1978, you could buy a brand new car for 5k. So what? And given an educlation? Give me a break. There are so many worthless degrees offered by these institutions. I know way too many graduates with liberal arts degrees that ended up working at Kinkos.
So you're in favor of taking all that money from the gate and the networks and letting the school spend it? So they can hire more DEI administrators or give the college president a big raise? Or maybe pay the football coach 10 million a year? Just garbage.
These kids generate revenue because students and fans pay to see them. What your daughter does is noble. But she isn't creating any jobs or generating revenue. And what she does isn't something that millions of people couldn't do. We live in a capitalist society where people are paid based on a skillset that is unique and generates revenue. It isn't perfect. But I'll take it over the sentimental nonsense of your post.

She can. That's exactly and precisely why the courts said the NCAA must also allow it for athletes.
