I wish some rich guy would do this for Wyoming as well... If the PAC12 starts playing DI Hockey, why not the MWC? I'd love to see the Fieldhouse remodeled for hockey!

I wish UW had hockey. I've always wondered why we had baseball (and now have a baseball stadium sitting empty) and didn't start hockey.

First, I love college hockey. It's a fantastic game to attend live -- indoors! -- on a winter night.

Second, we're a great geographical fit with the west/midwest schools that play hockey...that band of teams from Colorado up through the Dakotas and across to Michigan.

Third, talk about no recruiting disadvantage...those boys from Yellowknife would think they had died and gone to heaven when they saw Laramie.

Ah, well. A man can dream.

It would make sense, IMHO, more (popular) sports = more people coming to Laramie to spend their money, more merchandise being sold, more TV exposure, more jobs, etc... everybody would win. What's to be against?

Lol... wyo has the fewest sports possible to meet mwc standards.

We wouldn't do hockey.

Just a Point of clarification, the minimum number of sports required is 14, Wyo has 15.

Having said that, I think D1 ice hockey would be sweet at UW.

Is the additional sport a women's sport that is offered in order to meet Title IX requirements and to offset football's numbers?

Both: 2x5=10
Hoops, Track, Cross Country, Golf, Swimming

Men: 2
Football, Wrestling

Women: 3
Soccer, Tennis, Volleyball

15 indeed.

So it is okay to have more girls sports than guys but if we had more guys sports than girls that isn't okay and we lose funding?

Yes, number of sports doesn't matter. Numbers of scholarships and money spent is what matters as far as Title IX. For example, Nebraska has 9 male sports but 13 female sports. They have to offer more female sports in order to match the enormous amount of $$$ they spend on football, baseball, etc.

In theory you could have more male sports than female sports as long as the money and schollies were right.

Another interesting point Re: Title IX...funding and scholarships don't have to necessarily be 50/50. They have to be equal to the gender distribution of the institution. So if a school's student body is 70% male, their athletic department can spend 70% of funds (and associated scholarships) on male sports.

Ya I've never understood how UW didn't have any winter sport teams it just never made any sense to me.

Golf at Wyoming is the most pointless sport. Swap that for alpine and Nordic skiing. The club Nordic team was always pretty good when I was in school, and so was the club hockey team.

Although I agree completely - hard to justify having a golf course (that basically loses money every year) without having a golf team. Do away with the golf team = doing away with the golf course. The 5 month season just doesn't generate the $$ needed.

Wyoming is a natural for co-ed Nordic & Alpine skiing (as evidenced by winning national championships) and D1 men's & women's hockey. I blame Burman for not having the vision and balls to go for it! ;)

Men's and women's hockey sounds better than soccer/tennis and wrestling, not that I have anything against wrestling and the soccer girls do look good. Just a better fit imo
