Thursday Scrimmage

Honestly, that could have been the case. I just don't recall seeing the hit that would have taken him out.
It was the screen pass on the second to last drive where the left tackle missed the block allowing for a clean shot on Anderson. His head bounced off the ground but they kept him out there. Sawvel discussed it at length in the post game.

So we'll go from 90th ranked D to about 100ish ranked D?
I believe this is probably so given the brand new unit and lack of depth at DT. I also believe the offense will move the ball more this year causing the opponent to open it up more on offense.

People forget that we were 101 out of 128 FBS teams in total defense and 104 out of 128 in yards given up per game in 2016. I am seeing some similarities.

Transfers make it hard but 1 thing we have in our favor potentially is, based on last year's rankings, we face a lot of Os that weren't prolific last year. AF, Akron, suds, HI, NV, and Utah were all sub-100 total O. csu was just over 100 and fresno was 81.

Minus the last few games, WYO d was pretty terrible last year also.

I’ve concluded that having a great d is overrated. Having a great o is much more important.

“Defense wins championships” is just a platitude

You need to have good on both sides of the ball. We saw with Christensen that having an explosive offense doesn't mean anything if you can't stop the other team. We saw with Bohl that having a shut down defense doesn't mean anything if you can't score.

I'm good with focusing on one side of the ball. The other side does need to be passable, though.

Passable - to sub par is fine for D. We SHOULD have won the ‘ship in 2016 with our terrible D and excellent O.

We never got close with all the excellent Ds we had over the years.

This tells me having a great O is the key

The defense in 2016 may actually have been our most talented ever in term of NFL talent. I believe 9 players on the defensive 2 deep went on to play at least some in the NFL.

I actually believe Bohl proved you can win without scoring.

Agree that, to be a good team, you need to be proficient on both sides of the ball.

Was that when they beat us with the 5th string, freshman, walk-on quarterback?
No. I believe they played their starting QB. It is the game where New Mexico threw the ball only 5 times all game but ran for an absurd 568 yards with a 12.3 yard per rush average. Tashaun Gipson's little brother was unstoppable. Perhaps the worst defensive effort I've ever witnessed.

It is also the game where New Mexico took some ridiculous cheap shots on Josh Allen.
