Ending 5 year rule

I haven't followed this so no idea how likely but if it came to pass, I'd be done with college sports.

I can't find it now...but I saw an editorial (I think) that had numbers for the amount of people in the United States that made a living as a competitive athlete. I cannot recall the numbers but what has happened in college athletics is pretty dramatic in that market. By "professionalizing" college athletics, the pool of people who make a living as a competitive athlete has exploded. Right now that money is mostly coming in the form of trading upon their name, image, and likeness but real professionalization, collective bargaining, and labor law complications can't be far off....right?

I mean, when you start treating players like professional athletes, eventually we will decide to call a spade a spade.

I'm sure it will be litigated to death, but I just don't see a scenario in which we maintain any facade of amateurism in college sports.

Again, I have no idea about any of this but I wonder if an age limit would be enforceable for player safety? Then again, wasn't there a lawsuit which resulted in the 2 year religious/service exemption?
