2016 recruiting thread....

Does anyone know the scoop on Barnes? He's a physical specimen, but I haven't heard anyone talk about his upside/potential/future.
Was talking to someone in the know at a basketball game this season. (He is related to someone from the team). He said that Barnes is an absolute beast in the weight room, and damn good on defense. He said the problem is that he has stone hands. He can do some good things when he gets the ball, but getting him to catch it seems to be a major problem.

Theo Ratliff had the worse hands in the history of Wyoming freshmen and ended up pretty damn special. I've read multiple reports that think Barnes has NBA potential.

I think this would be a good time to review the players that appear to be our top targets in 2016:

1. Bryce Peters - 6'2" 180 SG, LaVerne, CA (Damien HS) - 3 star recruit with offers from Pepperdine, ASU, SJSU, Wyoming, and UTEP with many others likely on the way. AAU Teammate of 2015 signee Jordan Naughton. HS Teammate of SDSU 2015 signee Jeremy Helmsley. His HS team was the California State Division 3 Champs this past year. Known for his ability to get to the rim.

2. Dontay Bassett - 6'9" 205 PF, San Leandro, CA (Oldsmar Christian Prep - Oldsmar, FL) - 3-star recruit with a really long offer list. Notable offers include Boise State (just offered), Fresno State (just offered), Murray State, Wyoming, and Tulsa. HS teammate of 2015 Wyoming signees Justin James and Andrew Moemeka. Excellent rebounder, still developing offensively.

3. Alpha Diallo - 6'6" 195 SF, Denver, CO (Denver West HS) - 3-star recruit with offers currently listed from Wyoming and Manhattan but expect his recruitment to blow up now on the AAU circuit. Due to CHSAA transfer rules he didn't play in HS this past year after transferring from Abraham Lincoln HS to Denver West (or maybe vice versa, can't remember), but he has played very well for the Colorado Hawks on the AAU circuit alongside Deron Davis a Top 50 player and former teammate of Austin Conway. Big time length and athleticism on the wing. Still developing a perimeter shot but big time finisher at the rim.

4. Yoeli Childs - 6'7" 220 PF, South Jordan, UT (Bingham HS) - 3-star recruit with offers from Wyoming, ASU, USU, and Boise State with more certain to come. Plays on same AAU team (Utah Prospects) as top 2017 target Hunter Thompson.

5. Austin Mueller, 6'6" 190 SF/PF, Highlands Ranch, CO (Thunderridge HS) - Late bloomer with offers from Weber State and Wyoming.

I really like the players we are in the mix for in 2016.

Realistically, the top three would be perfect for 2016. I'm expecting attrition. I wouldn't be surprised if it happens at the guard spot either, with as many quality guards as we have. If that does happen, I would replace guard attrition with Alpha Diallo and get us another long wing like James.

Bryce Peters
Dontay Bassett
Alpha Diallo(if guard/SF attrition)

Recent article on Diallo from Rivals indicates offers from VCU and Nevada (among others) in addition to the previously mentioned Manhattan and Wyoming. Also indicates he is receiving a lot of power conference interest (UConn, Indiana, etc.).

Another in a line of players that Shyatt's staff has identified early only to watch their recruitment blow up. Ronnie Harrell, Keith Stone, Justin James, etc. Other than James, we haven't landed any of these recruits but it speaks well to our staff's scouting ability. Just need to land some of these guys. Great opportunity in the 2016 class between Peters, Bassett, Childs, and Diallo to land a potential Top 150 type player.

We must be getting ready to over-sign this year. Bryce Peters is still planning on visiting UW.

This would be a good signing for a number of reasons. The newest reason: it would keep him from going to Nevada or Fresno. Both of them have recently offered Bryce Peters.

Over signing is a bad thing in this class in my opinion, because there's not a guy on our roster that I want to lose. Unless we have a current scholarship player becoming a walk on...

Agreed.

I don't think it's a bad idea to keep recruiting the 2016 class. This is the 2016 class and it's not even August of 2015.

Remember the 2015 class. We had our five. Eric Turner decided to follow pussy to Rhode Island. We back filled with Morris Marshall. We had our five again. Then our big man from Florida failed out. We had to fill his scholarship with Hayden Dalton. So after we initially filled our five available scholarships, we had to find TWO more guys.

I'm kind of expecting attrition this year. We have more guards than we have guard minutes. I'm thinking a few of them won't get the minutes they want and one of those guys might decide they want to leave. Even if all of our guards want to stay, it always seems like one guy won't make the grade/can't stand the weather/gets homesick/gets thrown off the team......

It seems like Bryce Peters is too good to miss out on. I think we find a way to get him on the team.
This is exactly what I was thinking. Don't necessarily over sign for anyone but if he wants to wear the brown and gold, get it done!

We have kept recruiting every year afte we filled our scholarships. We always oversign. We might not have oversigned last year because of the timing of the departures but they didn't stop recruiting when they were full only to start back up after we had a decomit or a player leave.
I think the coaching staffrealizes there will always be attrition in this day and age of college basketball so they go ahead nad recruit more than they need. It has turned out for the best so far. get that Peters kid.

Bryce Peters has never verbally committed to Wyoming so that has to be a misprint. He is picking up a lot of offers now so I doubt he commits anywhere just yet.

I haven't seen anywhere that it says he is still taking a visit to Wyoming either. I'm not saying it isn't true . Just wondering where we heard that he is taking a visit to Wyoming still? Guess I missed the article it was printed in.

That would be sweet if we still picked him up but that would mean someone else would not have a scholarship and would have to pull a Hankerson if they still wanted to be on the team. What I mean by pull a Hankerson is pay their own way , not meaning any of the other stuff

It's written by a SDSU site guy so it doesn't really talk about Wyoming at all, except to note that Peters has an official scheduled to UW during the first week of August.

Okay nice. I am wondering though if he will still even come or if he will cancel it now that we have filled out that class. Be interesting to see. I have a feeling he won't come but who knows.

Bryce spoke on twitter. He'll be in Laramie on Saturday.

This is good news. Now we need to find a way to get him a scholarship

That won't be a problem.

What will be a problem is that he was just offered by UNLV. Expect more high major offers coming his way as well.

Ewww. I can't see why any recruit would want to go to UNLV at this point. It seems like a clown show of a program

Great news! I wonder who the coaches think might be "leaving" after this year..... I mean if they get him to commit the coaches must have something in the back of their mind about someone that is here this year not being here next year right? Maybe I am off base but there must be some thought process to over signing. I understand we have always lost a guy each year so it has worked out just fine but makes me think " okay if we are over signing then who are we going to lose, because I like everyone we just picked up"

Maybe someone who has to red shirt and they decide they don't want to be here anymore. Seems most of the guys we lost are guys who red shirted.

What do you guys think?
