In regards to balancing out classes, the current split for next year is
1 senior (Adams)
2 juniors (McManamen, Marshall)
5 sophomores (Washington, Lieberman, Aka Gorski, Herndon, Barnes)
5 freshmen (Williams, Conway, James, Moemeka, Naughton)
Are any of those bigs going to step up? I think our guard play will be a strength with Adams and Co. It's the bigs I am concerned with.
Personally, I think Herndon is further along in his freshman campaign than Nance was in his first year. I think the future is as bright for Herndon. He will never be the Uche or Ugo type of player but I think he can certainly fill the Nance type of big man. Barnes is the player I am super intrigued to watch grow. That kid could be a monster.
I'm worried about how fragile Herndon is.
This is a little bit of a concern. I like his skill set though.
The question is whether or not someone like Barnes or Naughton could grow into more of a post presence alongside him.
I do think we will miss the above the rim athleticism of Cooke and Nance though. With Shy loosening the reins a little bit on Adams and pairing him with Washington or Conway we will have a lot of quickness in the backcourt. There will be opportunities for the bigs to finish in transition if they run the floor.
We are a developmental program and I think our fickle fan base will have to keep that in mind. The longer you develop, the better you get. I still think we're going to be surprisingly competitive next year.
Justin James has the frame to be a dominant NBA player, not just college. He's 6'7", long as the day is long, and has the handles to play the point. He can shoot, he can pass, he can get to the rim, and like any Shyatt recruit: he's going to be a dominant defender. His length suffocates passing lanes. Justin James has massive potential.
Austin Conway brings an element of speed that maybe only one or two other colleges will have at the point. He's a great defender already and has potential to be Jaydee Luster like on defense. He excels in transition, has been improving his outside shooting percentage, and has all the personality traits to be one of the great "leaders" in Wyoming athletics history. Austin Conway has oodles of potential.
Jordan Naughton, is a big bodied guy that is an elite level rebounder in a dominant California high school league. Could he turn into a Wyoming version of Dennis Rodman? He has a lot of the Rodman skills already.
Andrew Moemeka has D.C./Nance athleticism. He's long, athletic, and good around the rim. The differences between him and D.C: he's been playing basketball longer, we get him for four/five years, and his shooting is better. He's going to need some time in the weight room, but he'll by an asset to us down the line.
Marshall I haven't seen enough film to say, but he's been doing well in J.C. and is rumored to have great athleticism. He's the wild card to me until I see some tape on him or watch him play.
I think Austin Conway will play if he can take care of the ball. I'm not concerned about his defensive ability. If his assist to turnover ratio is bad, he won't play much.
Justin James playing time is dependent on his defensive ability, like any Shyatt recruit.
I'm expecting James and Conway to be in the rotation next year and playing very well by the conference tournament.
