In being named POY in the SIAA, Justin beat out other 1st-team SIAA players such as:

Mario Kegler (2016 Rivals 4-star with offers from UCONN, Ole Miss, Miss State, USC)
Corey Sanders (2015 4-star Rutgers commit with offers from Marquette, Tennessee and Xavier)
Tacko Fall (2015 3-star UCF commit with offers from Baylor, Georgetown, Georgia Tech, K-State, Purdue, Tenn and Wake Forest)

Looks like he beat out the preseason #3 rated player in the state Deng Adel also who is headed to LOUISVILLE. He was ranked as the 31st best player in the country in ESPN top 100.

Wonder what Justin will rank in the state of Florida post season.

Oh, good catch. I don't know how I missed Adel. He's been Florida Top 3 in most rankings. I've seen rankings for James ranging from the teens to the 20s. Any final rankings should have him solidly in the teens with that POY award in hand.

Here is a write-up from Florida Hoops concerning Justin's SIAA POY honor. Outstanding accomplishment:

Just reading about these commits has me excited. For as good as they are there is no reason we shouldn't continue on our upward trajectory. Next year may be a little down but as sophomores these kids should all be pretty good and keep the train moving.

You would think they'd be helpful to the future of our program. But several on here would argue otherwise with you. Apparently, since we don't bring in Duke and Kentuckys recruits, we just suck! And always will.
I've seriously seen an upward trend in recruiting each year since we've had Shy here. But again others don't think so...
I think these guys are going to be effective and have great career here. You know, like surpassing Nance and Adams career numbers good.

I'm with you 100%. Some fans just want to wallow instead of look forward to what is to come. And other just want to devalue our recruit for reasons that I can't explain. The proof will be in the pudding, but how can you not like the guys were are getting.

Imagine a team that has the basketball IQ and the quickness to keep up with Adams. I'm not too worried about the perimeter guys, most of whom apparently can drive and shoot. For bigs, we have Herndon, who can play there even if my shadow has more weight than he does, and then a wave of bigs who bring more experience if not talent than DC. Assuming they develop (and Shyatt and staff have a great record for developing players!), maybe by the end of the year teams will be VERY wary of us. Regardless, next year's team will be fun to watch, and the year after even more so.

Next year will be fun. Kind of a 'no pressure' type of year. It'll be fun to see all the new freshmen and see the to-be sophomores develop.

Hyperbole much?

Duke and Kentucky are irrelevant to our goals. Boise State, Fresno State, SDSU, UNLV, UNM, and CSU are who we have to compete with.

There is no doubt that some of this current class will become starters for the Pokes and I would guess at least one or two of them will blossom into the star of the team (my guess would be James). The question is, will this class lead us to a conference championship or a NCAA berth.

In terms of Nance/Adams, I realize you are talking numbers so Nance's career totals are relatively modest as a result of being a bench player as a freshman and injuries/illness during his productivity years, but if the implication is that these recruits will be better than Nance, than all I can say is that would be awesome. The more I think about it over the last few days, the more I believe we are truly watching one of the all-time great players at UW. If Nance had the same type of supporting cast that Marcus Bailey did, there is no telling how far he could have taken this program.

Hyperbole? If that's how you want to take it. The point is we are going after the best players in Colorado and competing against all the in state schools. We are going after a few top ranked recruits out of Fla. James has run circles around some of these top recruits, to the point of gaining player of the year. That's a big accolade! We've got a good looking big which is a teammate of James and one from Cali who have done great this year.
We've beaten good programs out in recruiting these guys aswell.
And on top of that these guys have been following up with the current team and truly showing that they weren't just recruited by WYO, but that they WANT to be part of the Cowboy family. That says ALOT. Conway has already been working to bring in other recruits. That is a true ambassador, and something we desperately need.
Conway will be an amazing leader of this team in the future. So will James, Moemeka and our JC recruit Morris.
And I'm impressed with the size of these guys. We're going after big and athletic shooters. From 6-5 to 6-7 guards, that will make these guys in Shys system tougher to defend than where we are currently. We can't forget Barnes. Everyone is kind of down on him this year because he hasn't played much, but he will step up, he wasn't sought out by A lot of big school for nothing. And even if his playing time is down as a fresh, he's still had the opportunity to hone in his skills against the likes of Nance and Cooke this year. No body brings up Trey anymore, but I assure you he will be better than he was on the court two years ago. Adams has already broke 1k points and his intangibles are amazing. He has a great opportunity to be at the top or close to of a lot of Poke records.
And we are gaining on the lack of depth that has been an issue for the last four years.
I am not truly saying that people are down because we're not getting Dukes and UKs recruits, but we are competing for equal to better players than our "upper echelon" programs in this league. Time and wins show that this program is on the right track to get us on top again. Will it happen next year? No. We will be a young talented team who I still don't believe will drop off like McClains did.
And I'm not taking anything from Nance. The kid is a beast. He has battled issues the last two years, and if he hadn't his numbers would be significantly better. But, to say he's the best big we've ever had? Does Theo Ratliff, Josh Davis, Reggie Slater ring a bell?
