2 years is enough

The fact that we are having a difficult time coming up with names of JUCO's we've had over the years is telling. Stanton was good. Luke Anderson was decent. Troy Boyland was a sophmore transfer and is now the starting RG....but was sharing time with a true freshman. Justin Berger was a sophomore transfer and scored a TD against UNLV.

If we go the JC route, I'd much prefer a 3 years to a two year guy. Two year guys take one year to adapt and one year to maybe do something decent. Whereas, a freshman comes in and is a junior or sophomore by the time the JUCO guy has come an gone. Yes, JUCO's for the most part are band-aids, and usually not very good band-aids.

The best JUCO to ever play at Wyoming....Dabby Dawson, but he joined a loaded team.

I know this thread is taking a turn....but going back to 2007 (arbitrary),here are the JUCO's who signed with Wyoming:

CHRIS JOHNSON, WR, Solano C.C.
DERRICK MCMAHEN, DB, Palomar C.C.
ANTHONY WILSON, DE, Diablo Valley C.C.

ORLANDO ARNOLD, TE, Contra Costa C.C.
DAX CRUM, QB, Mesa C.C.

DC:
ROBERT BENJAMIN, QB, Phoenix C.C.

AUSTIN DANIELS, DB, Mt. San Antonio C.C.
MAZI OGBONNA, WR, Snow College
NICK PUETZ, OL, Coffeyville C.C.
DEJAY LESTER, WR, Snow College
B.J. SUMTER, DL, New Mexico Military Institute
KURT TAUFA'ASAU, DE, New Mexico Military Institute

LUKE ANDERSON, DB, Blinn C.C.
KOREY JONES, LB, Garden City C.C.
MIRALDO MICHEL, DL, Ellsworth C.C.
ZACH RUSHING, OL, Gulf Coast C.C.

JUSTIN BERNTHALER, DE, Fullerton C.C.
BJ HENDRIX, DB, Rochester C.C.
WALKER MADDEN, OL, College of the Desert
CONNOR RAINS, OL, American River C.C.
EVAN WILLIAMS, RB, Iowa Western C.C.

TROY BOYLAND, DL/OL, College of San Mateo
TYRAN FINLEY, DB, Contra Costa C.C.
J.D. KRILL, TE, Saddleback C.C.
JEFF LARK, LB, Arizona Western C.C.
MALKAAM MUHAMMAD, LB, Iowa Western C.C.
ALBERT PEREZ, C, East Los Angeles College
JESSE SAMPSON, S, College of the Canyons
JORDAN STANTON, LB, Pierce C.C.

BOHL:
JACOB HOLLISTER, TE, Arizona Western C.C.
AARON YOUNG, QB, ASA College

JOSH ALLEN, QB, Reedley C.C.
TAVITA FAAIU, DE, City College of San Francisco

Definitely some good players in there.....but a lot of misses too. DC loaded up on JUCO's.....didn't really work for him.

good stuff jimmy.

I see more misses than hits. I sure hope Josh Allen pans out.
He looked the part in the limited action he had this year. Strong arm, mobile, but needs to learn how to take hit. :D

I keep forgetting, at WYO we need to avoid JUCO and Texas.

Sounds like a recipe for success to me!

Do we also avoid WYO kids?

Isn't Josh Allen supposed to be the savior at QB next year?

I'm curious, what percentage of JUCOs would say "worked out". If you extend your same definition of "worked out" to Freshmen, how do the percentages compare?

Thinking about this a bit more, isn't this evidence we should do more? Starting TE that played in 12 games and was 3rd leading receiver (I think) and 5th leading in total yards. A huge miss on Young, but that was also a pretty short sale so to speak.

Josh Allen who is likely our starting QB and Faaiu wasn't bad before he left. He damn sure could have helped out this season. You can't pin attrition problems on recruiting JV players.

I actually think your post highlights why Bohl should have done MORE JUCO recruiting.

I remember looking back at a DC class and only 10 out of the whole class was still even on the team after a few years.

it better be considerably better, that UNLV game i did see things that made me truly optimistic but that's with a Senior QB, Hill is for real and if we get some LBs in the middle that can stop a cold then I'll be excited, 5-7 or better or else I'm thinking this is a task he can't do, and if he can't then who the hell can????? time will tell

I see JImmys post and actually remember quite a few of those guys being solid contributors. I think your post argues exactly what many of us have been saying. Why not fill in our depth with some? Quite a few on that list developed into contributors. If your argument is they weren't very good, I would say well how many of our guys in general have been good anyway? We haven't had great coaching, but we also haven't had great players either.

fair enough...."not getting him to stay" to me meant that is was Bohl's fault. All I am saying is what else was Bohl supposed to do? He flew to WA and basically told him he was the man for he job. Outside of forcing him, what else was Bohl supposed to do. If anything, Brett Smith leaving after Jr year was crippling to the team.

Apparently he didn't do enough to sell him on his vision. Could he have done more? I don't know. I remember thinking at the time though. He failed on his 2 most important recruiting jobs with Smith and Thompson.

I think failed is a little harsh.....these guys were gone and I believe Bohl tried to keep them.

Bohl paid an in-house visit to both Brett Smith and Jason Thompson during Christmas break to try to keep them.

Yep. And Brett was straight up with Bohl, telling him he was declaring while Thompson, well, yeah.

Instead of placing blame on Bohl for Smith and Thompson leaving, can't we just place the blame on Smith and Thompson themselves?

Neither one of them benefited from their decision, from a football perspective.

Thompson's got 6 whole tackles on the year. He's playing for a P5 school so I'd say it was worth it!!!!

Even though he blew a year of eligibility, forced to switch positions, and the coach he followed ditched him and went to Texas A&M?

He didn't ditch him to go to TAMU he pretty much got ran out of Utah by the Utes coaching staff because he was a dick.

I was being sarcastic, of course.

We are a nation of instant gratification. I'd prefer a long term build over short term success and I believe Bohl is doing that. If he doesn't, a lot of us will be eating crow...

+1

That said, I would like to see a quick fix on the offensive line next year to really build on the huge upside Brian Hill has shown. Do we have 1 year or 2 to make hay with his talent and skill?
