I had heard Jay Norvell kept playing his qb last year because of the NIL he was getting. If you're paying a player a lot, benching him means admitting you made a mistake. Could it be Hughes will be on the field because the coaches don't want to admit they wasted 800k?

Very well could be the case. Further, this says an awful lot about they eye for talent from the current staff...eh...head coach. Travesty.

It started with Sawvel announcing last year following the season at a press conference that he needed $1 million to go get a quarterback...

Gee...wonder what it would have cost to keep Kaden Anderson and actually coach him to his potential (which appears significantly higher throwing the ball than Hughes).

This disproportionate NIL crap absolutely does cause issues on a team. How many of Wyoming OL (making peanuts compared to Hughes) probably look at Hughes as an overpaid professional athlete versus a normal college teammate who they would defend at all costs?

Like most employers, I do not mind paying more to high performing employees. Lets recognize that because of NIL, the players are employees. The problem is Hughes has not been playing at a high level and we expected more for the money.

I remember the comment by Sawful he needed some serious cash to be a player in the portal. I was left with the impression that Wyoming would be pursuing the best of the what was left or moving in on players no one else was considering in hopes that maybe a few surprises turned out to be a good deal. Most were head scratchers and it never felt like we were seeing anything that was an excitement builder.

As for Anderson, he needed an improved OL and a couple more speedy WR’s along with a playbook (OC) with plays difficult to defend.

We got the new OC. Haven’t seen anything so far that says this move is paying dividends.

The OL appears to have digressed. They certainly don’t push the defense around. The rush game doesn’t exactly create fear. Of course the pass doesn’t keep defenses off the line. It’s like the defenses can taunt Wyoming with a dare to try for the big play knowing they will rarely - if ever - get burned.

Our WR’s for the most part don’t get much separation and still run routes (too slow?) that don’t exactly create confusion for the safeties on who to cover since man coverage usually is very effective at limiting our open pass plays. When our WR’s do get open the QB is usually under duress because the opponent rarely gets burned for putting 7-8 in the box.

As for the OL - we should focus on being good where the attack starts. Josh Allen would be frustrated with this offense. It’s reminiscent of the 2017 team. Josh would make this offense look good just like he carried the 2017 team. Likewise an improved OL would make Hughes look better.

There is no choice at the present but to accept the leadership and it’s clearly Sawful.

Take a look at executive compensation v. average employee compensation for most large companies. There is generally a significant disparity.

A change in spending philosophy needs to be made. 100% of the NIL pot needs to be spent on excellent OL, DL, (1) CB in that order. Seems like it’s always spent disproportionately on flash players (even at the big boys). Make it know that UW primarily invests in big men and you would see pretty quick success and probably raise some eyebrows nationally (especially among G6).
