Excellent article. Hits on a lot of good points. Unfortunately, it paints a serious challenge to UW and a dark picture, generally.

Personally, this resonated: They just were like, 'I'm not sure who I'm giving this money to. I don't feel comfortable with it.'"

I've worked hard for my money since they day I turned 16 and put myself through college at UW working multiple jobs at times. It's difficult for me to open up my checkbook to contribute to student athletes knowing they're receiving more benefits than I got around that age. I understand they work hard for it, but it's a mental hurdle for me. I'm sure it is for others, too.

On a side note, how lucky are we to have a guy like Coach Wicks?

The article references a future we are all expecting. A split between the haves and the have nots. I personally hope this happens sooner rather than later. NIL is a misnomer. It’s PSC-professional sports contracts. The best players will go to where they can make the most money. Let the SEC and Big 10 poach teams from the big markets and let’s sort out the rest. So what, if Wyoming is in the second or third tier? At least there is a chance to become competitive. I just wish we had an AD that could lead us in a new direction.

It's important because if people give their money and reach UW goals, then there needs to be accountability if success isn't achieved. For me personally, the lack of transparency in all of this makes me most hesitant. Why the secrecy?

I like the resort fee. Zone Jackson Hole with several additional fees to fund uw and uw athletics. Additional $5 voluntary contribution for all hunting licenses. A new UW Athletic Success specialty plate. WYO tourism board sponsorship. State funds for endowed accounts, etc. Our leverage is we're the only university in the state.

No mention of the fact that UW failed to win a conference football championship or regular season basketball championship in ANY of the 15 prior years or the overall winning percentage of the programs or any other program for those prior 15 years. All of which were when he headed the department before NIL. So to say that the NIL is the sole reason for the poor performance ? . . .

It's a pretty straightforward article...this quote confused me at first :

"We struggled from the time NIL started really in '22 until the end of June this past year," Burman said.

I had to re-read it a few times before I understood he was talking about struggling with raising funds. Does this mean that they have found thier footing recently?

Having athletes going where they can make the most NIL money is going to be a disaster for Wyoming...but that wasn't the reason we pretty much were an afterthough in the years leading up to that point.

Anyone with a sense of business could figure out early on that the NIL group coming out of Laramie were way behind in the efforts. That group should have concentrated on being lawyers and not enter this field withoutr a real commitment. Their followup was pathetic at best!
