Embarrassing

I think I agree.....which is crazy. I think Svoboda could have done better than 6 of 23 for 64 yards and an INT.
Svoboda would have likely had 2-3 more INTs. But the fact that we are honestly discussing whether Svoboda or KA is worse than the other tells you all you need to know about the current state of our QB room and OL. The other stories that need to be on the same level as KA's craptastic play are how useless our OL is in pass blocking and how incapable our WRs are at getting open.

I am dead serious when I say this: I would rather have Evan Svoboda under center than Kaden Anderson. Is he a better passer? No, but at least he can run.

Not me and I'm dead serious too.

It really is a sad indictment of how pathetic the recruiting for the offense has been and especially at the QB position.

Anderson and Svoboda were Bohl recruits who were recruited after Becker who never had a chance to play and Williams who transferred to the Utah State bench due to his amazing prolific offensive skills which were golden for Bohl but not good enough to lead USU to the MWC championship. Actually - of the 4 mentioned Williams was possibly the best.

Sims and Drube are the Sawful recruits. Sims seemed to be the better choice over Anderson but as usual, Sawful declares a starter and he sticks with it. Will we see Drube to finish the year? I won’t be surprised if Sawful stays with Anderson and only allows Drube mop time.

Will Sawful go on an all out offensive revamp and start by hiring an OC that can identify/recruit the best players to run the scheme? Sawful needs to get out of the offense other than being the ultimate responsibility for it. He obviously is not a complete manager to promise an offensive upgrade only to make it worse.

The offense has a couple of decent RB’s if they stay. Otherwise every position needs reviewed. We need to focus on pursuing one of the better QB’s seen at Wyoming in years. I am talking at least a Peasley, Brett Smith, ACS, Bramlett type of player. If the Montana and Montana State’s can get the QB’s they get Wyoming can as well at least recruit that ability. Wyoming has been stuck in this QB quagmire of find a recruit with several missing attributes and then hope they develop in a haphazardly designed offense surrounded by a lot of mediocre to average talent.

The future doesn’t look promising at this point and my last hope for future success until the pain of the Sawful hire is gone will hinge upon what is done to address the lack of offense with staff and players.

I have a crisp $20 bill that says Anderson is the starter for the NV game and plays the majority of the game even if he is playing like garbage (which is highly likely). Adaptation and transitioning to the future have never been attributes of a Bohl or Sawful coached outfit. They ride the broken-down mule until it is literally dead in a heap. This season is a lost cause. KA is now functionally an upperclassman and is not the answer going forward. He was a port in the storm when we were facing another year with Svoboda as the signal caller. Time to move on and try to prepare for the future - which KA should not figure into.

Needs for the offseason (we aren't firing Sawful considering the crummy contract TB signed with him, the UW budget, and the fact that everyone and their sister is looking for a new coach):

1. QB recruits/transfer
2. WR recruits/transfers
3. OL recruits/transfers
4. OC and QB coach that - at very least - isn't a proven failure at their previous stops (looking at you JJ)
5. New OL coach
6. Move JB back to WR coach and leave him there - he isn't ready for the OC job
7. Dedicated ST coordinator

I actually think that right now is a buyer's market for better coordinators. With the upheaval in the HC ranks, we should have some fairly good options to bring on decent coordinators that have been spun out from all of the firings of head men across the country.

If I was Bouknight/Sawful, I might give each QB (Drube and Anderson) 2 series against Nevada and the QB who performs better finishes the game. Nevada’s overall defensive ranking is 132 out of 136 FBS teams. Anderson can probably be ok against really bad defenses but certainly has no shot against a SDSU or Fresno defense where a defense having to respect QB run is a requirement to move the ball.

I’ve given up hope that we have any shot against Hawaii and I would play Drube the whole game and see what he might be bringing to the table for next year.

Yes. 👍 The offense is bad and Sawvel is a mouth breather. JB might be OK but I wouldn't bet a ton on it right now. Not sure that he has any freedom to call plays. Who knows? Go Pokes !!

I just can't shake the nagging belief that it's not just a lack of talent under center. I think the system and the environment are uniquely terrible for offensive production and it has been that way for a loooong time. I hear a lot about how all these great FCS offenses have amazing QB's...but they really don't. Some are good and they will move up but some are good at the level they are at. If you put them in against bigger, faster and more prepared FBS teams they would struggle.

Now...is Anderson or Svoboda any good?...it sure doesn't seem like it..AND not only are they not amazingly talented, they are in a system where the best of the best struggled.

Agree, I don't think the top FCS offenses would score much versus SDSU. Their defense was nasty.

I actually dont think the offensive line is that bad. You have to get rid of the ball in 3 seconds against good defenses, its just is what it is. There are open receivers too. Anderson has just missed them. Hell he cant even hit a rb on a screen.

All in all the play calling has just been incompetent. Its not like 20 yrs ago when we were just on such a lower talent level than byu, utah, and Tcu. I think we are right there. We couldve very easily won at AF, UNLV and Fresno with a better qb and better play calling/game plan.

I largely agree with this assessment. While the line blocking hasn’t been great in pass protection, it is not as bad as our stats would suggest. Anderson struggles to go through read progressions (he largely just stares down his first read) and his release of the ball takes what seems forever. Add in lack of mobility and it’s not a great recipe for dropping back to pass and being successful.

This is the positive that I see in Drube moving forward. His release, in the limited action, appeared significantly quicker than Anderson. Add in his better mobility and he might be just fine with this level of pass blocking if the play calling is coordinated to his strengths and if the throws and reads aren’t overly complicated.

I was all for changing out OCs and hoping JB would bring some juice to the offense. The play calling, however, in Fresno was piss poor. They should have ran the ball much more than they did. Relying on an inaccurate non-mobile quarterback to try to win you the game is an exercise in poor judgment. They wasted a solid defense this year due to poor judgment on offense from the outset.

The interior of the line has done well, but the tackles have been putrid all season. Go back and watch some tape and focus only on the o-line. Both tackles are either getting their doors blown off by edge rushers or holding.

Most of that can be fixed by playing under center more often and setting up the pass with a better running game. The play calling has been uninspired at best.

Agree. All the kids we have playing for us had multiple other FBS offers. The issue is not talent, but coaching I think. They have not been coached and are now poor football players because of it
