P12 - MWC

Before any fcs discussions, we need to see what the landscape of cfb will be. The effects of the House Settlement can't be understood. Revenue sharing and NIL and payments for the Settlement itself? There will be lots of programs, big and small that will struggle with this.

It's clear that at minimum sec and big10 are either going to split or ask for so much unequal revenue/playoff access that the system will be very unstable eventually leading to split.

The split will likely be along the lines of who can afford to pay (at a high level) to play. Maybe not even all the power schools will be able to afford it? Maybe it will just be along p4 vs g6 lines? Bottom line is that we don't even know what college football will look like in 5 or 10 years, but I think it is certain that it will look much different.

We'll now be in a situation that we can or should be able to compete more consistently for mwc championships. We still have power schools on the schedule. csu vs WYO has had very little conference implications anyway and they're still on the schedule. usu? I'm glad they're gone and off the schedule. Uneven distribution to kiss bsu behind? They're a loss and obvious name brand but glad to get rid of sweetheart deals. fsu and suds? Good programs but I honestly didn't care about playing them anyway. If they weren't on the rotation,it didn't bother me.

Yeah, certainly a weaker conference but I don't think it's that bad. Winning in this conference with a decent ooc slate might be better than .500 or worse in a stronger conference? We're on a new boat and likely sailing in new waters in the not too distant future. I want to see how all of this goes before thinking about fcs, fbs, etc. There might not even be a fbs any longer?
So many variable for sure. I think a lot of people are sick and tired of "following" though. They want outside the box thinking and an exciting new direction. I don't think that's a great way to look at it but I see why people have that impulse. Picking a novel new direction for the sake of doing it is surely a mistake. I agree that we should take a wait and see approach.

The worst part? Pac-2 thought CSU was good enough but Wyoming wasn't.
2 things to note here:
  1. The sheep have been hemorhagging money for a decade trying to get themselves into a "big" conference. They fit right in with WOSU, who also don't know how to curb spending.
  2. It's not that they thought the sheep were good enough and Wyoming wasn't. It's that the sheep are so desperate to elevate their standing that they've been offering to blow every AD in A5 conferences for even a look at membership. They thought this was their golden egg.

The July 2026 deadline to add an 8th team to Pac- weak was not what I had assumed from prior posts. Given that year of time , they will likely be able to find their 8th sucker. As far as Wyoming and the rest of the MWC are concerned, we are in the same boat as the rest of the G5 waiting for the next shoe to drop in conference realignment. I seriously doubt that the Pac-weak teams will have a place at the big boys table when all is said and done anyhow.

That realistically gives the conference 30 days to find a new member. Most conferences have heightened buy-out clauses if an institution gives less than a year's notice, just like the MW does. That's a significant barrier to any other schools looking to make the jump to the PACarcass, especially if they aren't getting a full revenue share.

Two schools that literally no one wanted + the "top half" of the MWC + whoever else they can get will never have a place at the big boys table when all is said and done.

It will almost certainly be Texas State. The PAC will offer them full share membership and they will jump at it. I'd be surprised if it was anyone else.

Best I can discern at the present exit fees are currently:

Sun Belt - $5 million.

The AAC- $27.5 million.

I am guessing exit fees go up with less than 1 year notice. Maybe past June 1 all other conferences double their exit fees. I don’t know and haven’t looked. July 1 may be really late for the dream team from the AAC. Texas State even doubled at $10 million is a nice bet. A full share and equal autonomy with all 7 other programs and the pee12 you have to admit is the best top to bottom west coast G5 team. If I am Texas State I would stick to the soup bowl better be full of goodness because they played their cards right earlier not begging for a mercy invite.

Texas State has a huge enrollment, a very nice campus in a milder climate and $$. I also think they have a very forward thinking AD and President who look at what they have and feel they have earned the chance to play with the big boys.

Won’t get into the depressing thoughts about what’ve, could’ve, should’ve been here in isolated Wyoming. Every time we might have made some national noise we pretended to not exist for the next several seasons. All I will say is I simply don’t think our administration even pushed for inclusion. Why would they when they think being competitive with the MAC is a huge success going 6-6, being sub .500 against teams with a winning record and finishing 5th or 6th in conference while losing the homecoming game?

What we are now is #3 or #4 in the G6 group of conferences. I don’t know if we are currently #3 or #4 in the battle for relevancy with the Sun Belt. Revenue wise we still beat out the CUSA, MAC and Sun Belt so I will declare the MWC #3 in the G6 at the present.

With that at 5:09 MDT on June 2nd I will await to hear the results of the mediation I have not heard yet.

One thing I will say is I wonder how effective the lawsuit on the exit fees being excessive is going since the traitors heeded the same clause that defined the exit fees to avoid a doubling of those fees. Unless the MWC already conceded the exit fees in the mediation, I would expect from the movement on the exit notice that the MWC comes away with a generous portion of the damages sought.

I am betting also that Texas State is the 8th team. St. Mary's will also join as Oregon State likes their baseball program and their men's hoops is very solid. Would not shock me to see something like Memphis as football only down the road and / or Texas San Antonio. Texas State and UTSA have a budding rivalry. If the Pac 12 is going to Texas for one they will try to take the other. Again, not immediately, but longer term.

The Texas San Antonio Road Runner held up a sign at the Texas (Longhorn) regional that said, "eat more beef". That's the type of creativity the UW completely lacks. :) I know it is a small thing, but it just shows some creativity that draws some laughs and attention.

Lots of time left for dominoes to fall. The pac is not going to be a superior conference in the G6. In the next year, more realignment will take place. Once Boise gets an invite to the Big12, they’ll all be scrambling and complaining once again. As much as I hate Boise, they’re the only team that has a brand that will garner a bigger invite. They’re all chasing money, and it’s not there. For now, the MWC is alive, has enough teams, and is a conference that has just as much access as any other G6 to money games in the post season. Selfishness, inflated egos, and a false reality of who they really are is clouding their vision. If I were to guess where it all started, Boise was the head of the snake along with San Diego St to convince USU and CSU to come along. Wyoming needs to win, stay competitive in non conference games, and let the big dogs split (sec & Big10). After that, regional conferences might reappear and then it’ll be a matter of time before the big 2 fans realize they’re a minor league for the NFL and it’s not as fun. The sky isn’t falling, it’s just reshaping. The powers that be are literally killing their best commodity for money rather than what made NCAA football and basketball 2 of the best sports options for fans. Let the 4 leave and take care of business. Beat the hell out of them on their way out and laugh when their media deal is the same as ours. It’s already laughable that they think the pac brand means anything to anyone other than the two that were left behind.

The one thing nobody is talking about is that revenue sharing, NIL, and settlement payments are going to be really difficult for osu and wsu who are used to living on the pac12 tit. When the increased expenses and reduced revenue hit, they'll be in dire situation living on a pac 12 budget with even more cost but with a aac revenue at best.

I did listen to The Monty Show after I posted and felt encouraged. They made a lot of good points as you did Cowboy20. Don't forget Fresno. They owe the exit fee as well.

Living a champagne lifestyle on a beer budget for sure! Welcome to the G6 is what Gloria should put on their poaching fee envelopes!

I may be remembering this incorrectly, but whatever happened to the Comcast 50 million dollar over payment scandal? If I recall correctly (and I may not be), there was some discussion about whether the incoming Pac members would have to share some cost in repayment to Comcast and that this would be a barrier. I could be remembering incorrectly or maybe it was resolved.

I think it was resolved in the pac settlement when all the schools split. I think it was closer to 70 mill?

Don't be fooled by BSU being in the playoff last year, they are quickly losing national relevance. The media market is just not that great to be of interest to the Big 12. More likely in my opinion is there will be further consolidation of the truly big schools ( 30 or so) into super conferences with the likes of Alabama, OSU, Michigan, Georgia, Texas, etc. leaving some of the weaker schools like Vandy, Northwestern, Iowa State Mississippi State , etc. behind. Yes the things are reshaping I just hope Wyoming does not get trampled in the meantime.

I’m not sure some of the traitors (spud U as the best example) liking OSU and Wazzoo calling the shots for the conference. BSU had that role to some degree in the MW.

A thought on Texas State and how desperate the pea12 has to be if that is the direction they need to go.

P4 D1 teams in Texas:

Texas
Texas A&M
Baylor
TCU
Houston
Texas Tech

D1 teams in Texas:
UTSA (AAC) $27 million exit fee
UNT (AAC) $27 million exit fee
Sam Houston (CUSA) $1.75 exit fee
UTEP (MWC) $18 million exit fee
Texas State (Sun Belt) $5 million exit fee

Not sure there is a delivery of anything that moves the media needle if Texas State is the cheapest get in desperation for the 8th team.

Texas State is the 7th largest enrollment university in Texas and despite winning 2 bowl games in a row, they are best known for being a successful baseball program. The media market is Austin with San Antonio nearby but we all know how much CSU is NOT competitive with CU and neon Deon for the Denver market and likewise AFA doesn’t turn the media world upside down in Colorado.

Also - if Texas State was only offered a 50% share it would take them at least 2 or more seasons to stop losing money even if the pee12 media deal is $10m per year.

As for travel, San Marcos to Atlanta is roughly the same distance as to the nearest pee12 program located in Fart Colons. San Marcos to Charleston SC is one of the furthest travel destinations in the Sun Belt at 18 hours drive time compared to OSU which is about 32 hours drive time or 56% of the distance to Oregon. Obviously the travel will be significantly more expensive as it means more hours flying time.

This is where I am speculating that the pea12 will be trying to drive down the total payment to the MWC as far below $100 million as possible to have as much extra cash as possible to recruit football member 8 to be at the minimum to be a conference.

I live in Austin and can tell you nobody cares about Texas State.

To be honest, the only college teams anyone in Texas really care about are UT and TAMU. Every other university is mostly an afterthought unless the person has some personal connection to that university.

Texas State football averages about the same attendance as UW, despite being located within an hour of two cities with a total metro population of 4+ million and enrolling a total of 50k students.

The media is not going to give two shits about Texas State right now, but they may be a decent medium to long term investment for the PAC. I’d say they have a much higher potential ceiling than UTEP or NIU do.
