I bet if we had played Michigan State and had our asses handed to us for our season opener, that we would all be in a better mental state. Losing to an FCS team sucks. It doesn't mean the end of our season by any means. Just look at SDSU - have they ever won against an FCS team?

Bohl will get us there. Our senior talent was built for the "spread" and the "bend and break consistently" defense. We lost much of what was left of our talent last year. For the love of god, I sure hope he can build us some solid ranks of recruits that stay around so we don't suffer through this pain again for a long long time. 35% winning percentage since 2000. 7 wins against BYU since 1970.....bleck.

My stance? Until further notice I am 100% confident in the direction of the program. This is year II of a rebuild phase. Ups and downs, and plenty of them are on the horizon. Worried? Not in the least. In Bohl I trust. He's earned it.

How has he earned it? By winning at a lower level? Why is it such a given that it takes 4-5 years to turn a program around? Is it because this is Wyoming and it just takes longer here?

When Mcelwain took over at CSU, they had just completed their 3d straight 3-9 season. His first year was rough. His second year they clobbered us and made it to a bowl game. His 3 year was even better. I don't want to hear about all the talent he inherited. CSU had one of the worst defenses I've ever seen. Last year, they had a freshman receiver that looks NFL ready. Good luck getting any great receivers to come to Wyo. so they can run block.

I'll add another thought to this. UNLV was as low or lower than we were and is very much in a rebuilding process. They also have budget issues, tough recruiting issues, and a common trend for losing.

They hired a high school coach (I actually liked the hire) who brought in some pretty good assistants. If UNLV greatly outpaces us in terms of building a winning team (I know, big if), I better damn sure not hear a bunch of excuses from WYO. There is no reason our rebuild should be worse or slower than UNLV's (if either one of us is able to build something).

My stance is well known and often lamented on this board. I don' t think Wyoming will ever be competitive at the FBS level again. I think the program is what it is; a poor to middling program that mostly will win four or five games, sprinkled in with frequent truly dreadful seasons (of which this looks like it could be one of those) with the occasional seven or (if the stars align right) eight win season. I think we belong in FCS. I just don't get being in FBS just to be in FBS, like it's some medal of honor when you can't field a decent team.

I don't think it matters who the coach is. Like all those who have tried since Joe Tiller's nice couple of years, I think Bohl will have his four of five years, not do much, and be fired. Then a new guy will come in, declare he is changing the program (like they all have) have a catchy new saying ("Cowboy Tough"), ("Power River, Let 'Er Buck"), and then proceed to get his ass handed to him on Saturdays.

I was born and raised in Wyoming. I will always be a fan. And I hope against hope that a coach or Cowboy team will prove me wrong. The past 20 years tells me that my line of thinking is probably the correct line of thinking. There's hope, and then there is results. We have seen the results. I would like to see us pour our resources into basketball, a program we have seen can win. I believe in basketball, where you need less players, we can build a solid program in the Gonzaga vein. Football, I don't believe will ever happen, unless we drop down a level. Maybe not even then. Not a popular thought I know, but my thought, none the less.

Where are those resources going to come from if we're playing in, say, the Big Sky Conference with it's attendant media contract?

The point, with all due respect is meaningless. Wyoming has no desire to drop down a level - nor should they. But I understand some of the things that SDPokefan said.

The idea of dropping down to FCS is ridiculous. Do you ever see a school like Kansas dropping down to FCS? How about Duke? Believe it or not, it's very possible to pour our resources into basketball without moving down to FCS. Football isn't stopping us from doing that at all.

The point, with all due respect is meaningless. Wyoming has no desire to drop down a level - nor should they. But I understand some of the things that SDPokefan said.

I agree the discussion is academic, Wyoming will not drop a level unless/until the P5/G5 split happens. I'm just making the point that raising the white flag in FBS has ramifications beyond the football program.

Yes, he has earned the benefit of the doubt based upon his pedigree and his incredible work that resulted at NDSU. You think that job was a piece of cake? Bohl has a presence about him, a confidence that tells me that before he is done here we'll be playing for the MWC championship. Don't run this jive about CSU and their former coach either. No two situations are identical and what CSU was able to do under Coach Jim is irrelevant so far as what goes on in Wyoming. The Pokes are being rebuilt the old fashioned way - by outworking everyone else. Take a look at the roster for crying out loud - WHAT DO YOU EXPECT at this point??? Nobody (least of all Bohl) has said that they'll be recruiting WR's to come to Laramie only to run-block. It's a pro-style run first offense that will afford WR's many opportunities...you act as though Bohl wants to run the ball 60 times a game. No mirrors, no pixie-dust, no magic, no shortcuts...this time Wyoming football is being built to last - and its about time. I guarantee you that.

Do the coordinators write a game plan for offense & defense?

No, he does not write up the game plan by himself. It is a collective coaching staff decision...input from all, however, the HC sets the template for how he wants to play, then the coordinators will fashion their schematics to match that vision. The HC has final say, and in some cases, the HC will override his coordinators making them in some peoples minds -- coordinators in name only. It really can be different in subtle ways depending on the coach and the staff. Bohl is a bigger picture guy as a coach and he relies on his coordinators a great deal so far as autonomy is concerned.
