Your new RB coach

FWIW, my sources here in Columbia (multiple people on this one) are telling me that Jason Ray will be Dave Christensen's RB coach at Wyoming. Jason is a former Missouri wide receiver, just finished up last year, who was a backup on the 2007 Cotton Bowl team. He's originally from Broken Arrow, OK, and is currently working in the Mizzou athletic department in some sort of a fund raising/developmental capacity. He's a great guy, really bright, obviously this is his first coaching job.

No knock on this guy coming in. We won't be running much anymore so I guess having a great RB coach is not a top priority. Makes sense to me.

The Missouri style spread offense certainly doesn't emphasize the run (and definitely not anything like what Glenn and Co did), the threat of a rushing attack is always a bonus. No reason to go completely 1 dimensional, I'm sure DC is hiring Ray (if true) because he expects him to be a good RB coach, not just hire him for a "unimportant" position. Young coaches bring a lot of enthusiasm to a team, I am glad to see the staff will appear to be a good mix of experience and exuberance!

Interesting to see someone who should be a graduate assistant getting this job. May as well make current UW graduate assistant Jovon Boughnite the Offensive coordinator. Not only was he a standout, he played NFL and has already been a graduate assistant making him 4 times as qualified as Ray.

Maybe it will be OK with this guy as Coordinator: http://msn.foxsports.com/

The one advantage that Ray has over JB is a simple one - he knows Christensen's system.

Maybe there will yet be a place for Jovon but that doesn't mean that Ray isn't qualified.

He may know the system...but I sure hope that our other assistants will have more experience

If the other assistants don't...we are in deep poop. Although the OC & DC will be huge KEYS for Dave to succeed at UW.

I think it is way too early to start criticizing the new coach and his selection of coaches (especially those that are just guesses). I loved the hire based on what I have learned about DC and I am willing to let him decide who he wants working for him. Once it is proven he has made a bad selection, get on him but until then, be positive. His background is offense, so if he likes the guy for RB coach, I am going to back until he is proven to be a bad choice.

Go Pokes. I can't wait for the 2009 season.

Obviously this is a Wyoming sports message board...

Most sports-related board posters come here for inside information, pertinent information (TV times, stats, etc.) to share their own thoughts, to bitch & complain, to praise, to make fun of and joke, to meet & converse with other fans with similar interets, and yes also to "criticize". Although UW fans are tame in comparison to most other athletic programs...all this is still part of the message board mantra.

I think anyone has a right to having "raised eyebrows" on this hire. Think about it, a back-up WR from two years ago, that is now doing some form of Missouri type CJC, hired as running backs coach? Doesn't look (on paper) to make sense. WR coach...maybe. DFO...maybe. Yet, what the hell do we know, the guy may be the next Jon Gruden or something...I know I sure hope so...but still I wonder.

Ray is a smart young man who knows the offense very well. His biggest impact will probably come on the recruiting front. Has good connections in Oklahoma and is a very strong communicator.
