Then the refs call a penalty for defensive holding on a critical play and waive the flag. All Smith did was run off the field and take his helmet off. My friend said when he took his helmet off he was looking down and yelled, "Ahhh! Come on Refs!" He never even looked an official in the eye, and he wasn't screaming at refs the way the Nevada announcers say he was. He got ejected on two bad calls by refs who were all about throwing flags for "unsportsmanlike conduct" Remember, Claiborne got one too on his TD recept. And all he did was place the ball down on the ground. He got up way to fast to be saying anything worth a penalty to the Nevada player.
This was not Brett Smiths fault, we got cheated in this one. And we tried to play through the officiating. But, when they eject your leader for stupid crap? Give me a break. I saw more celebrations from Nevada when they scored. Where were the penalties then?

I guess a lot of us forget that we were 17 point dogs and SHOULD HAVE WON THIS FREAKING GAME. I'm not into moral victories. I'm pissed that Brett got ejected (which basically cost us the game). I'm pissed we allowed Nevada to score with a minute to go. I'm pissed we allowed Nevada to score on their 2nd play in OT and then watch us go 4 and out. But, in the end, I bleed brown and gold and will leave the crying for the babies.

I can pretty much attest to this. Smith only did what he normally does and was penalized for it. The refs were hacks and I was getting ready to start shouting it. :tickedoff:

It was NOT, I repeat, NOT Brett Smith's fault, nor any of the players (though the secondary has some issues though, to say the least), the refs cheated them several times throughout the game, and the replay video and screen makes channel 5 news look like a 60inch HD TV with plasma screen.

He did cost us the game. Should have known better after the first penalty. He gets plenty of credit when we win, and this one he lost. Buck up and accept it. Brett had no business behaving the way he did, it evident to everyone that the referees were going to call unsportsmanlike for just about any reaction. Just not a smart thing to do at that point of the game.

99.99% of referees would do the right thing and not take the game into their own hands by ejecting the best player on the field for something that isn't blatent or unsafe. I don't put this on brett, we praise him for his passion and I know I get fired up when I see him fired up. I didn't see anything different in this game then what I see from Brett every game. I put the loss of brett in the game squarely on the shoulders of the short white haired ref with a stick up hi yahoo.

Plenty of similar flags were handed out in games I watched this weekend, including one where a Safety came in on a blitz and sacked the QB and yelled something like "AND STAY DOWN!" after he got up. 15 yards unsportsmanlike and a first down.


After getting that flag, though, you HAVE to know better than to yell at the refs again. Just shut it.

From what I remember, it definitely looked like he yelled at the ref and wasn't yelling at himself - and I believe that's what the ref said too. DC claimed he was just walking off the field and yelling into the air, so who knows? One of the big drawbacks of not having televised games is that it's hard to find film afterward (obviously an even bigger drawback is that touchdown that probably was a fumble).


As for the first situation - more and more people claim that Smith taunted the Nevada fans and dropped a few F-bombs in the process as they were booing when we scored. Hearsay - maybe, but more than a few steady Nevada fans appear to claim this.


Anyway, I'm not ready to completely put those two Personal Fouls on the refs - though the way they called things was about as one-sided as it gets - my point is that the flags could very well have been deserved from the lack of evidence we have as spectators. Not to mention, Smith DID apologize - whether to appease the reviewing board or not, I'm sure we'll never know. Yeah, it's just one game, and the kid's carrying the team on his back, but sometimes we have to realize that he's got flaws as well, and he's still learning. I'll readily admit that I expect way too much out of him - that's kind of part of being a passionate fan!
