Roughly 116 years ago a young man named Clayton Danks rode Steamboat and the Wyoming logo was born. Wherever Mr. Danks was watching from, I hoped he enjoyed this Wyoming Wrestling win in front of a great home crowd. It was an inspiration for the graphic this week.
Sefton had a tough test to start the dual and would come out on a 4-0 loss. I know losing is terrible but watching that energy in his match I knew something special was about to happen, though it took some years off my life watching.
Luke Willochel was next up and was going for points from the whistle and would win via tech fall 15-0. Alden had a tough draw and was down 14-3 late in the third, I thought a loss via major decision is ok, but he got turned and lost via pin. Alden was the aggressor early in this match and some great offense, but sometimes it doesn’t work out. His aggressiveness was a welcome site. Gabe would win 9-2 in his match; he had three cautions and gave up a point which cost him the MD. The pin at 141 and that missed point at 149 could play huge in the dual; I was wrong.
Jared Hill has had a slow start to the year but gave his coaches high fives and went out there against the #17 wrestler and wrestled a great match. The match would head to SV tied 1-1; Jared would get his famous body lock and score the pin! Adam Engel captured it here: I even saw Coach Branch smile!
Sloan Swan decided he also needed some flare for his win and with time running out in the third he countered a shot and scored a neutral danger takedown as the clock ran out to get his upset win 4-1.
Davis came up short in his match and wrestled tight, which is not his usual style. Eddie snuck a win late in the third and is trying to overcome a sickness from Soldier Salute. Gunner Henry faced a very tough #6 Berge and fought hard, but Berge was able to score a takedown and win via pin. You could tell Henry wanted to win more than anything.
We would head to the HWT match with Wyoming leading 20-18 in the dual score. Carroll came out firing and would lead 9-2 early. He wrestled the 2nd from bottom and didn’t do anything to make a mistake and came into the third and thought he would just circle, but that isn’t the Cowboy way and would blast double to come away with the 16-3 win!
This is a massive win for this young Wyoming team and the LOVED the home crowd; it was rocking! I am sure the NWCA will vote them out the mid-major poll at this point but keep supporting this team.
I will be live in Morgantown Saturday for the dual and looking forward to a great time. That dual will be streamed on ESPN+ at 4pm MT.
MVP: Jared Hill
