Wyoming with a new S&C coach?

Wyoming: A source tells CoachingSearch that Buffalo head strength coach Zach Duval will join the Wyoming staff in the same capacity.

Here is Duval's bio from Buffalo. http://www.ubbulls.com/information/directory/bios/duval_zachary" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; He learned from the best in Boyd Epley at Nebraska.

Interesting. Certainly seems like Bohl keeps his ties with past coaches he's worked for. I wonder what that will mean at defensive coordinator?

Glad we didn't stick with the guy we had. Strenght and conditioning seemed to be an issue and alot of that falls on the S&C coach.

This is a huge deal. Talk about somebody that can put the "tough" back into Wyoming football - Duval is it.

Was NEVER high on Greener (as most here know) - but heard he intends on staying in Laramie.

Is Greener just moving to an assistant role or just staying in Laramie in general? I'll be honest, anyone connected to Epley is big time in my book.

I was told he was out at UW - but then somebody reported he was staying in Laramie (assuming as the S&C coach). Turns out he intends on staying in Laramie (yes as reported), but not with UW. Don't know if that will change - you know how the buddy-buddy system works. Especially when you are in certain dinner party circles.

The Duval to UW thing is a huge deal.

Having never played even high school football, I don't fully understand the impact that a strength and conditioning coach can have on a program. I have read that Saban drags his dude wherever he happens to land. I have heard a little about the Husker Power model...but not a lot.

Can someone with a bit more actual knowledge than me explain how the S & C program works, why a different coach can make a difference, why Greener was not the guy for the job, and how the Husker model is different than others?

Thanks in advance.

For starters - this is a pretty good read / summation:

This is a big deal. I think this may be one of the missing pieces that we were missing under DC and I'm thinking we got a good one.

Ok, maybe I am a little naive here but doesn't the strength coach service all of the athletic departments? Why would a new football coach dictate who the head strength coach is? Isn't that kind of disregarding the other coaches opinions?

I would imagine that money from the football department probably pays for his salary. Also, probably because the vast majority of his work is with the football program and other programs use his assistants.

The S&C coach probably spends overall more time with the players than anyone. So it is a very important hire in the grand scheme of things. The S&C coach is the one that develops the players physical attributes but also their mental toughness in many ways.

Actually, each program that utilizes a strength and conditioning coach has their own. Training and nutrition goals have become so sport specific that strength and conditioning coaches typically specialize in a given sport. That says something about just how big of a business college sports in America have become.
