Wyoming vs Penn State

Man, what an atmosphere those fans provided for our Wyoming Wrestling team against the #1 Wrestling team in the nation, I don’t care what FloWrestling rankings say. The announced attendance was 4,686 and did they made it feel like 11,000. It was not secret Wyoming was going to have an uphill battle at most weights, and they gave up some pins and tech falls. Often, we were the aggressors in matches scoring the first takedowns or pressing the action from the whistle. One of those matches was Luke Willochel and Marcus Blaze where it was a clear takedown for Willochel but the ref let the match continue until Wyoming threw the brick. Coach Ford was jumping around for the call like he had just won the Powerball jackpot. Luke eventually gave up the pin for the lose but that aggressiveness wins 90-95% matches the rest of the season.

I knew if Wyoming took any matches into the 3rd period, it would put PSU on the ropes between the altitude and the fans. It came close in the 141 matches where Alden may have pressed a little too hard down a point and lost 10-4 but man he was probably feeling that energy and wanted to fire up the crowd. Eddie was next against #5 Rocco Welsh where he was close on two latedown takedowns to send the match to SV.
I said on the WyoNation podcast I expected wins from 84-HWT and that we could steal one at 33 or 41. You could tell how Joey entered the mat that he was feeling the energy and ready to take on Connor Misarola. Connor got in on a leg on Joey, had it elevated, but Joey fought it off; I knew at that point Joey was about to press that match, and bonus to that was Connor decided to choose neutral to start the 2nd period. We stayed at 0-0 and Joey would start on bottom and get a quick escape and go to work. Connor tried a low attack that was quickly stuffed by Joey and drove through him for the takedown which appeared to injure Connor. The Penn State coaches were calling for injury time, and I am sure his leg was hurting, but his lungs were probably burning. Joey worked for a 10-2 MD and the AA erupted.
Carrol was interviewed this week by FloWrestling saying he was going to put on a show for the fans and did he ever against Cole Misarola. I don’t know how a guy that big moves like a 125 and forces HWTs outside their comfort zone. Now Cole is more the size of Carroll, but Carroll is so strong that he kept Cole at bay; even when Cole had shot, Carroll just countered him. A solid 10-3 win for Carroll with a standing ovation from the crowd. This quote from Carroll shows how much he loves the Brown and Gold, “This state has real men. In America these days, I think there are a lot of softies out there. But the state of Wyoming has a lot of real men. Lot of cowboys. Just that grind lifestyle.”

Whats next
Wyoming, mostly backups, will head to Reno to complete Dec 21 with the regular lineup slated for a two-week break until Jan 3-4 and the Soldier Salute in Iowa.
The team has deservedly earned this break to be at home with family and friends over the Christmas break.

I wanted to thank the wrestlers for staying around post-match and signing autographs and even out in town having dinner entertaining the young kids asking them questions and signing autographs; it means the world to those kids.

I hope that everyone has a blessed Christmas break and the dads get a solid restock of those typical dad gifts: underwear and socks.
