I missed the beginning of the game. Who ended up starting for us?

Liebs
Gorski
McManimal
Herdon
Naughton

Cool. Thanks. Our bench might be even better if that is what he goes with if for starters. We have Dalton, JJ , Adams and Moemeka coming off of it.

Moemeka is being held out of the game tonight for some reason.

It's over. Cowboys won by 25. We we're up 35 before we dumped the bottom of the bench in there.

That was probably the last time we'll see Austin Meuller play this season.

Yep. Definitely will redshirt.

Quick Thoughts:

1. Justin James - Greatness awaits. This will be his team by next year. His physical development reminds me of Larry Nance (obviously very different players, positions, etc.). He is noticeably bigger and stronger this year. Has all the tools.

2. Pace - We don't look comfortable yet playing fast. Having said that, players like Adams and James can do damage in the open court and Herndon and Dalton both run the floor well for frontcourt players. Not sure we are ready to really crank up the tempo yet though.

3. Herndon/Dalton - Speaking of our skinny duo, I thought they both looked good tonight. Obviously you can't tell much from the level of competition, but both looked confident shooting from the perimeter and finishing inside. They will still struggle defensively and on the glass against bigger stronger teams, but I think both are poised for solid years.

4. Jordan Naughton - Playing a team without any real post presence is not a good evaluation for Naughton, but I continue to like what I see from him. His post move for a bucket early in the game was pretty. He should have a solid year and be a huge part of what we do over the next couple of years.

5. Louis Adams - Speaking of liking what I see....Adams can play. He was the perfect addition as his skill set fits what was an obvious gap on the team. His ability to put the ball on the floor and get to the rim will be critical and in the long run as he learns MWC level defense, his athleticism will be a boost to our perimeter D. Was our best rebounder at times tonight. Like most JC transfers, I think we will need to be patient, but he looks solid.

My guess at our rotation:

Starters:

G - Lieberman
G- James (I can't imagine Gorski continuing to start over JJ)
G - JMac
F - Herndon
C - Naughton

Bench:

G - Kelley
G - Adams
G - Gorski
F - Dalton
F/C - ????? Possibly Moemeka, but we didn't see much today

Redshirts:

G - Redding
F - Mueller
F - Jones

Others:

C - Barnes - Just doesn't look like it is coming together for JB. He will have a role though with his size off the bench against certain teams
G - Marshall - Hard to say since he is recovering from an injury, but I am not sure where he fits into the rotation
G - Averbuck - Classic walk-on role. Can't see him getting any productive minutes.

This year is definitely a building year towards the future, but I think it will be fun to watch and I can see a bright future.

I think you hit it pretty well. One nice thing about the possible switch of James and Aka Gorski is it gives each unit a guy who can get his own shot. Starting Aka Gorski and McManamen, both guys have to have looks set up for them for the most part.

Good points.

James looks like he's a lot stronger this year. He needs to stay out of foul trouble, but he looks like the most dangerous offensive player on the floor for us at times. When he exploded to the rim for that dunk he took off a long ways out from the rim. He's a weapon. If he can develop Marcus Baileys pull up mid range jump shot, he will be IMPOSSIBLE to defend.

Adams looks great at getting to the rim. I hope he's as good at the free throw line as he was tonight and in the Bahamas. He's going to get fouled a lot. When he blocked that shot in the lane, it reminded me of Josh Adams. I agree Nowhere. I was really impressed with his ability to rebound. He's a scrappy dude and goes after the ball hard. He seems like a glue guy, that does everything well and enjoys doing whatever it takes. He doesn't mind getting floor burns either. This summer he was on the floor more than anyone else on our team, scrapping for loose balls.

I like our defensive length. It really looks like we can cause havoc with a pressure defense, busting up passing lanes. In addition, it looks like we'll be difficult to score on in the post. I know Chadron isn't very big, but neither are a lot of MWC teams. At points in the game, our length down low was suffocating Chadron State. We will be pretty hard to score on in the post this year with a couple of bruisers and a lot of long bodies around the rim.

Our team defense looks like it will be better than last year and maybe as good as when Nance was still here. I don't think we'll see any let up defensively. They have work to do, but they're going to be a difficult squad to score on this year.

Gorski and Herndon look like they put up some shots this summer. Herndon is noticeably stronger. He looks noticeably more confident as well. Theres something about his shot that looks smoother this year. I can't figure out what it is yet, but it looks like he adjusted his shooting mechanics. Whatever he did, he's been drastically better shooting from deep in the scrimmages and exhibitions so far. I think he's about .500 from three right now in both exhibitions and the scrimmage.

Gorski looks quicker. You can tell he lost some weight. He's getting his shot off faster. He really looks like the guy in his recruiting video that's going to give McManimal a run as the best outside shooter on the team. He looks much more confident this year.

Moemeka made a huge difference this summer. I wonder why the coaches held him out. He's a weapon in the post with his athleticism. We'll be a much better team with him in the rotation.

Cody Kelley looked solid. For a redshirt, I think he's going to get a ton of minutes. He needs to clean up his passing a bit, but so did everyone. It was definitely an exhibition. He probably won't win us many games, but he isn't going to lose us many either.

I like our depth. We've can show people different line-ups that excel at different things. If we want ball control, we'll probably see the starters. If we want to press tempo we'll probably see Adams, McManimal, James, Moemeka, Herndon, or Dalton. I'm guessing that's why James started on the bench. They might use him when we want to press or for instant offense. Our depth is going to give the staff the ability to match up well with our opponents this year. We have a lot of different skill sets on this years team.

We need to clean it up and value the ball a bit better, but it will improve without Averbuck and Meuller playing. We've got a lot of work to do, but there's no way we finish tenth. I think we could finish as high as third or fourth if we improve every night and eliminate the turnovers.

I don't see it with Cody Kelly. Im sure he is a nice kid and all, but he isn't even on the Chadron St. guard level. He is A. Too slow for D1 basketball and B. He has ZERO right hand ( just watch, he will never go right handed when pressured). There is no way he sees the court against most MW teams.

Lieberman, Marshall, Adams, James and Aka-Gorski are all better ball handlers than Kelly.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't see this kid getting much floor time...but if he does, Iam very confident in saying, we are in trouble this year.

Quick takeaways from the game: Adams and JJ are good enough to start. Both could (should?) start in place of Gorski, IMO. I wonder if Adams has ever, or will ever play the point? I think with the "departure" of Conway, that's where we're thin. Naughton is going to be a walking double-double, and Jason and Herndon both played fairly well considering this was the first real action of the year.

Mmmmm yes. This is what I was waiting for. Now, if Gorski somehow plays more minutes than JJ this year I might destroy property at the university.
