Wyoming/USU a look at stats

Hey, all! Looking forward to the game this week. I live all the way out in Alabama, but I'm taking my wife and kids back to Wyoming and Utah this week to visit family, so we'll be able to attend an Aggie home game this year. I'm going to have to see if either of her brothers (Poke fans) would be interested in coming with us.

Anyway, I've started doing this breakdown of statistics each week and thought I would share them with you. The idea behind them is that you look at your raw stats compared to those of the opponents you have played. That way you can somewhat get around the question of "Well, they put up a lot of yards, but is that because they have a good offense or because the teams they've played have a crappy defense?" The thread on our message board has a more detailed description, as well as tables showing how each of our teams have performed so far.

I know it's not a perfect analysis, but I think it's at least interesting and it helps me put off actually accomplishing something important in life. Feel free to comment on my methods. I'm a big boy and I can take it. Well... unless you think I mean like a "Brokeback Mountain" kind of "take it", in which case I definitely can not take it.

That is quite the breakdown, I'm impressed.

In college especially, I've seen enough football to know that stats should be taken with a grain of salt. I'm glad you have already acknowledged that it is probably a waste of time, haha. We all need hobbies, though!

Agreed. The only stats that matter are Wyoming 3-1, USU 1-3. We will find a creative way to lose this one too.

I love stats, but my head pretty much exploded digesting these charts. Having said that I like your written analysis in the follow up posts so I know what I'm to be looking for.

I'm not so sure about that, though seeing all the turnovers you guys had against CSU makes me at least a little bit hopeful. Then again, we forced like 5 fumbles vs Nebraska, but only managed to actually get the ball one of those times.

I feel USU is the best 1-3 team in the nation. BYU always gets the lucky breaks and the refs that look the other way (how many blatant holdings on that last drive? 3? 4?), CSU was mental errors that have probably been fixed now, and Auburn... well, first game of the season and nerves in a big stadium?

Wyoming NEEDS to win this one to have a legitimate chance at a bowl, and I think they know it. Hopefully they also play like they want it. I have a feeling it'll be a really close game.
