Wyoming to open 2015 with North Dakota

Perhaps we ought to poll all the people with Irish heritage how they feel about Notre Dame's mascot...

However, I do understand her sensitivity to the issue. A nickname like "Redskins" is blatently racist. But Florida State maintains it's nickname "Seminoles" with the approval of the tribe. The school has several educational ties to the Seminole nation, so in that regard, if the nation in question is OK with it, then I'm OK with it.

Here's the University of North Dakota logo:

It seems like a respectful image to me.

From Wikipedia:

The Sioux tribe has failed unambiguously to approve the use of the name "Fighting Sioux" in the name of the University of North Dakota. UND has appealed several times to the NCAA and is currently under a championship host ban for not removing the moniker. When it moved in the fall of 2009 to change its nickname, one of the two Sioux tribal councils in the state sued to have the name retained.

Like mentioned above, UND had two tribes battling over the name, one tribe of Sioux wanted it gone, the other Sioux tribe gave their blessing.. ultimately, the nickname was removed this year. They're now just known as "North Dakota" until they can figure out a new nickname. UND has probably the nicest NCAA hockey arena in the country, Engelstad Arena, and when the owner was having it built he had the Sioux logo plastered everywhere, in the granite in the walkways, on the seats, etc to try to save the Sioux nickname. Look it up, great place to see a hockey game.

I guess this beats talking about conference expansion though.

I wanted Wyoming to change from the Cowboys back in 2000. I didn't think the team represented what I thought a "Cowboy" was.

I was rooting for the "Off Constantly" nickname. So that when we lost almost every game, the AP would report things like "bWHYu Cougars beats Wyoming Off Constantly".

From my understanding, BOTH Sioux tribes generally support the name "Fighting Sioux," but one tribe's leadership went against the majority partially for publicity reasons (this from a half-Sioux, half-Arapaho person whose kids I babysat a few times). Who knows what's really true, though... I can see why bastardizing somebody's culture could be seen as offensive, especially the way some teams' mascots do it. I really thought North Dakota was different in that they actually celebrated the Sioux, though...

Well, the Utah Utes have the tribal blessing to use their name. Though, with how Utah has been playing, that may change.

You know, Alyssa is right. The use of Indian descriptions or phrases as mascots should be dropped. Not because the names aren't good names for sports teams, but because those phrases are pure Indian mythology and haven't been a reflection of Indian culture for more than a century.

Perhaps if all sports teams would dispense with Indian phrases the public could reflect upon Indian culture as it currently is... the highest rate of unemployment, substance abuse, poverty levels and all of it under the guiding hand of the Federal government...and tribal leaders who don't want to live in the 21st century.

You're right...the Fighting Sioux? They haven't put up a fight since Little Big Horn. Change it to the "Fighting Scots"...after all they were the first European settlers to the area and I'm sure they won't mind. :fuel:
