Wyoming Spring Football: Sophomore nose tackle Appleby has vaulted up the depth chart (WyoSports.net)

About six months ago, Chase Appleby experienced the lowest of lows for a football player.

The University of Wyoming redshirt freshman defensive tackle had been a backup through the Cowboys’ first six games. But during the week of practice for the Colorado State game, Appleby was demoted to the scout team.

But now, Appleby is no longer on the scout team. He was listed as the starting nose tackle Monday when first-year coach Craig Bohl released the first depth chart since spring practices began three weeks ago.

“When I first found out, I was in shock, but I wasn’t,” Appleby said of his reaction when that depth chart was released last year.

Wyoming wide receivers learn details the hard way

"Up-downs" are exactly what they sound like.

First, you're up. That's the comfortable part. Then, you get a cue. Maybe it's a whistle. Maybe it's a shout. Maybe it's the piercing eyes of Wyoming receivers coach Kenni Burns staring daggers through your helmet.

Then, you're down. This is the part that hurts. As soon as your hands brace your fall, you're pulling yourself back to your feet, zinging up and down like a yo-yo that won't sleep.

Usually, one up-down is followed by more. Then, the deep, wheezing gasps for air. Occasionally, the process is punctuated with a dash of vomit.

For Wyoming football, Bohl's arrival means new atmosphere in Laramie

Jonah Field is waiting.

For now, it is quiet. On a sunny Tuesday in April, a persistent Laramie wind blows in from the south, over and around the video board looming behind the far goalpost. A solitary man in a black hooded sweatshirt runs the War Memorial steps, the beat of his sneakers reverberating on shiny metal stairs.

Behind the vast, empty field, a sign that reads, "CAUTION: Cannon Firing Zone" is nailed to a tree. The wind whistles, but there hasn't been cannon fire in these parts for ages.

Down a walkway and across a paved sidewalk, the Indoor Practice Facility stands nearby. Inside, it looks nearly identical to how it did a year ago. A full turf field is laid out, with the yards marked off and a brown bucking horse lying proudly at midfield.

Today, we published a story on the difference in enthusiasm and optimism in Laramie this spring, brought on by the arrival of new coach Craig Bohl.

But though the story was extensive, lots of good material was also left on the cutting room floor. Here's even more story from Wyoming athletic director Tom Burman, running back Omar Stover and nose tackle Uso Olive.

On Wyoming's defensive struggles the last few seasons, and how that did not mesh with Wyoming's culture:

“Obviously, the way we played last year in particular defensively, that’s not going to resonate with any culture. But it certainly is not going to resonate in Wyoming. Wyoming people, they have a work ethic mentality. They’re proud of how they work and how they’re tough, and obviously we did not accomplish that last year, and even the year before. [Bohl's] style is going to resonate with Wyoming people.”

“On defense, they want toughness. They want gritty, tough, hard-nosed kids who will hit you. And on special teams, they want to be physical.”

“Brett Smith was pretty exciting. So it wasn’t an offensive issue, in my opinion.”

I think these comments from Vorel's story speak volumes:

“I think one of the biggest differences is the team camaraderie that we have now," says Dominic Rufran, the team's top returning receiver. "People come in to practice enjoying it. They’re excited for it. A lot of the time before, we would just be dragging. We wouldn’t want to be there."

“I feel like we’re all a team now," Stover says. "Everybody cooperates. Everybody hangs out with one another. It’s not offense and defense anymore. It’s just the Wyoming Cowboys.”

“Words can’t explain it. It’s just way better," Olive says, comparing this spring to previous ones. "The guys love it. It has benefited us from day one to where we’re at right now. What happened in the past is in the past. I already forgot about it. We’re in this new era, and that’s where we’re at. When you love the people that are coaching you, you want to play hard for them.”

Burman: “Coach Bohl and his staff have done a great job in the community, being visible. Craig is a CEO. He understands that his role as a football coach includes public relations, the external piece. He’s doing a really good job of that.”

UW SPRING FOOTBALL: Rosters released for Saturday's spring game

Here are the rosters for the University of Wyoming's spring football game, which will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Jonah Field at War Memorial Stadium in Laramie.

Also, there will be a free kids clinic for those 12 and under at 12:30 p.m. in the stadium with members of the team. Players and coaches also will sign autographs after the game.

Wyoming football survives, grows after challenging spring camp

This western movie is nearly over.

Nearly a month ago, the Wyoming Cowboys -- complete with a new staff, two new schemes and a fresh batch of enthusiasm -- embarked on spring practice. In the 14 practice sessions that followed, Craig Bohl's team was pushed to its collective limit. The players were tasked with double reps, as the teams split apart and frantically scrimmaged simultaneously.

Their will, early on, was stronger than their bodies. Running backs Shaun Wick and Omar Stover both vomited on the first day of practice, running outside to deposit their breakfast before quickly rejoining the team. Stover sat in the locker room with his jersey on that first day while his teammates shuffled out, refusing to move -- because he couldn't.
