Wyoming Spring Practice 2014

I think we are always emphasizing size as weight around here talking about beef. I'd much rather have a lineman weighing 295 than the same guy weighing 315 with all fat added. Tell me he drops 20lbs and is much stronger and will be more agile on his feet and I'd take it anytime. Isn't most of line play technique anyway? Obviously you need some size but strong legs and footwork are more important.

Remember you can't use weight to measure talent. One of the things that Duvall wanted to do was to add muscle to all of the players. This is not reflected in total weight but rather in body composition. Look at Maulhardt....he claims to have put on 25 lbs of muscle in winter conditioning however his overall weight doesn't back up that claim. Simply put he dropped fat and added muscle which may or may not have caused his total weight to go up. I think it is important to look at body comp and then overall weight as a measure.
Don't think the weight on the depth chart are up to date. We heard Wick was around 215 and May was over 200. The weights listed on the depth chart are from last year.

Wyoming's Eric Nzeocha adjusting to tight end move

Eric Nzeocha doesn't look like a tight end.

Wyoming's 6-foot-3, 212-pound sophomore is a glider, a lanky athlete who covers long distances in few strides. He's bony, with long limbs and pointy elbows.

He certainly isn't senior tight end J.D. Krill, a 246-pound battering ram. But as of this spring, the ex-wide receiver is a tight end nevertheless.

"I’m a bigger guy, and the coaches said I could be a match up problem [at tight end]," Nzeocha said. "So I agreed.”

Wyoming Spring Football: Moving around nothing new for UW defensive back Cortland Fort (WyoSports.net)

Cortland Fort has been down this road before.

While in high school in California, Fort wanted to play cornerback. He did, but he also played some at strong safety.

Fast forward to today and the University of Wyoming sophomore is getting looks at cornerback and safety, as well as an extra defensive back in nickel situations.

“I feel there is a lot being thrown at me,” said Fort, who played in 10 games last season as a redshirt freshman but didn’t record a tackle.

Bohl wants to see Cowboys finish

Wednesday marked the final spring practice in full pads for Wyoming prior to its spring game at 2 p.m. Saturday.

And, first-year coach Craig Bohl said after Wednesday’s practice he could tell that some of the players may have been looking ahead to Saturday’s spring game, a Friday practice in just sweats and the end of spring drills in the coming days.

“I think some of our guys might have had the attitude that they want to get through today’s practice and spring ball is about done,” Bohl said. “We have to learn how to finish, and I don’t think we are there yet.”

Notes and Quotes: Bohl urges Cowboys to finish

Before the Wyoming Cowboys can finish football games this fall, they need to finish practices this spring.

With only one practice remaining before Saturday's spring game, Bohl saw a weariness and lack of focus on Wednesday that his team will need to correct.

“There were some good things out there today, but there were some things that we certainly need to work on," Bohl said. "I think some of our guys might have had the attitude of, ‘You know what, I just want to get through today’s practice, and spring ball’s about done.’ We need to learn how to finish, and I don’t think we’re there yet.”

It's certainly hard to blame the players, considering the work they've done to get to this point. Wyoming just completed its 13th spring practice, and consistent double reps and scrimmage work made it the most rigorous in recent memory.

oh yes, i understand it's end of spring practice and all, but we gotta have that Killer Instinct next year, not quit on plays and stop the ball on D!!!! I think we'll be fine!!!

NEW HEIGHTS

Wyoming's Appleby drops weight, rises to top of depth chart

There's a very distinct difference between thinking you're in shape and being in shape.

Chase Appleby can tell you all about it.

Last year, Appleby thought he was in shape. The nose tackle weighed in at 6-foot, 295 pounds. He didn't move as well as when he was in high school in Frisco, Texas, knifing into the backfield on hot Texas Friday nights.

Cowboys Complete Last Padded Practice Prior to Spring Game on Saturday
Saturday's Spring Game Will be Open and Free to the General Public

Wednesday morning's Cowboy Football practice saw the Pokes practice in full pads for the last time prior to the Spring Game on Saturday, April 19. Head coach Craig Bohl commented after Wednesday's 13th practice of Spring football that he thought his team was challenged by the fact that they were reaching the end of a Spring practice schedule that pushed the players to their limits physically and mentally.

"We had our last padded practice today," said Bohl. "On Friday, we'll only be in sweats, and we'll be brushing up a couple things and staging for our Spring Game.

"There were some good things out there today, but there were some things that we certainly need to work on. I think some of our guys may have had the attitude that, `I just want to get through today's practice and Spring ball is just about done.' We need to learn how to finish, and I don't think we're there yet. Nonetheless, it was a good spirited practice. We ended up with a goal-line scrimmage and the defense came up with a big, big stop, which was encouraging.
