Wyoming plans to re-establish run game versus EMU

Second-year Wyoming coach Craig Bohl hit the nail on the head.

“That’s probably one of the poorer performances we’ve had since I’ve been a head coach, offensively,” he said, referring to the Cowboys’ 24-13 loss to North Dakota last Saturday.

While I understand the need to establish a running game as a balanced offensive approach. I severely disagree with Vigens lack of variety in his play calling especially when UND made no changes to their LB positions. It's like he is relying on the d-line to eventually tire and break if they just keep pounding away. Never mind the score or the fact that our defense was on the field way to long. It was almost a guarantee that every first down was going to be a running play designed to hit a gap between the guard and tackle. Predictability is your enemy....

And if us yahoo fans know it's going to be handoff, handoff, pass, I'm guessing the defensive coordinator on the other teams knows it as well.

Then again on the other hand it could be viewed like this: This is our game plan boys up front, our MO is to pound the football and establish superiority along the trenches. Get your asses in gear and move some mountains so our backs can have room to run. If you can't do it we'll find some other players on the team who can. We are not a pass-happy or pass-first football team. This is our system and this is what we're running, so get used to...like so many on that WyoNation fan board had better get used to some growing pains along our way to a conference championship eventually.

I'm more of a fan of adjusting game-plans to, well, win.

I know Bohl will not do, long-term, what you suggest. Likely they are doing it now because they simply can't complicate the offense at this point.

If Bohl and Vigen do as you suggest, we will be seeking a new staff in a few years.

Bohl and or Vigen won't deviate from the game plan on offense nor with the identity of the football team anytime soon. They will sink or swim with their approach and philosophy. I happen to think they'll swim well...eventually.

Funny how people bashed Christensen for not deviating from the game plan. But lose to a shitty FCS team in the season opener, and you spin it in a way that is somehow admirable.

I love the whole "If you don't do it we will find other players who can" rah-rah shit.
What other players? What are you smoking that makes you think this team is heading in the right direction?

I've already alluded to my points about the program heading in the right direction. This is not a good football team currently. Once you wrap your mind around that, accept it, and understand 'the process' of building a program from the ground floor up, then, and only then, will this possibly begin making sense to you. ALSO: Christensen lived and died by his spread offense with very little in the way of substantive defense. Bohl and company have their own philosophy and direction, and they'll sink or swim with it too. I think they'll be doing the backstroke quite well beginning in 2018.

I don't think you are right on that, exactly. I do think they will strive to establish the run, but I think (and hope) they have sense enough to adapt should it be necessary (after we get through this year). I honestly think that everyone is so young, they have to keep things really simple and are using the "smash mouth" rah rah crap to keep the guys going.

A good pro-style O is well balanced. The run can help set up the passing game but it can't be just run run run---well, other than this year.

I suspect we are working towards a BSU-like offensive set. However, it takes a lot of time to get a good pro-style O installed. Definitely a lot more complex (when the full playbook is at your disposal) with more reads than spread which is why I think younger guys struggle with it more than the spread.

If Bohl and Vigen insist on run at all costs with a one dimensional (as much as possible) approach, it won't work with a pro-style smash mouth system.

I agree with you on the bolded type. Operative two words in your sentence: 'takes time'

I've always been a fan of the Pistol Off. It's how I succeed in my coaching.
The one play that I heard they ran the pistol set last week we had our best 14 yard run. Go more pistol!
Our since people complain that we "never" get big linemen, but seem to get big shifty backs and usually a mobile QB, maybe we better start going Option...

Just throwing out hypotheticals like everyone else.

KC, you coach high school ball?

KP... I knew we would find some middle ground. The pistol is an awesome formation. I also apologize for my comments insinuating you were an idiot. It was a movie quote and a poor attempt at humor. We are all hoping for the same outcomes and no need to attack each other.

On offense, I'd open up this game by throwing a deep ball and stretch the defense a bit. Make them defend the pass. I'd pass a bit heavy to start the game off. Once they realize we can pass the ball as we please, we can start running and bringing play action into the mix. Mix it up a bit. If it is run, run, pass, the defense will stack, stack, and expect a pass.*

* Wyobrandx used to be the head coach of an NCAA football XX team on the PS3 that did very well. You should respect his coaching authority as it translates well to the real world. Just nobody has realized they should hire him for his expertise in coaching - yet....

We both bleed Brown and Gold. It's all good.

It didn't appear that Cam audibled at all on Saturday. NoDak filled the box and, instead of checking out of the play, we ran into the teeth of 8 and 9 men in the box. Is he not allowed? Did he check into the wrong play? Did he have the ability to check out of the play and opted not do it?

And he was a damn fine coach too! A legend in his time. :twocents:

I might be off on this, but what I saw with Coffman last Saturday was for the first three quarters he was trying to thread his passes past defenders to his receivers. Several of those were very close to being intercepted. In the forth quarter, he threw passes over the defender and was successful twice. It looked to me like we were able to get behind their defenders fairly easily.

Interesting analysis. From the highlights I saw on a UND show online of Cameron's passes, it actually makes sense. I wonder if the MCL strain could've affected the throws at all?

(BTW, just now I almost called him Colby :o )
