Wyoming Fall Camp 2014

It looks like they really don't want May and Wick to get hurt in a meaningless scrimmage. We all know what they can do. The #3 running back spot will be a battle. Although I'm guessing Stover had the tougher job running against the ones and the others ran against the twos, and threes. Still Hill and Evans numbers look good.

I always liked Hill. He's on my list to play as true freshman, and if he's battling Stover I'm sure the coaching staff gave him reps with the ones.

I was wring about the freshman QBs playing though. Looks like kirk had this on lock

Was this scrimmage more about who will fill in behind the starters and / or who will redshirt?

I really wish for QB Statistics we could see where the QB started from, Nick Smith stats look interesting 3-5 17 yds, w/ 11 yard long and 2 TD's it's like he was basically inside the 5 yard line.

Did you really think Coach Bohl would turn down the challenge from Gus Bradley?

Cowboys Scrimmage for Nearly Two Hours on Saturday
Defense Began Scrimmage Strong, Offense Pleased Head Coach as Scrimmage Progressed

The Wyoming Cowboys conducted a lengthy scrimmage that lasted nearly two hours on Saturday morning in Wyoming's War Memorial Stadium. It was the first scrimmage of fall camp for the Pokes. Head coach Craig Bohl was impressed by the way his defense began the scrimmage, but said he was also pleased with how his offense responded as the scrimmage progressed.

"The scrimmage was a pretty long scrimmage," said Bohl. "I think we ran 98 plays, which is a little bit longer than we normally go.

"I was particularly pleased with the No. 1 defense early in the scrimmage. I thought we showed great energy and tackled well. We defended the pass well.

Coaches come away impressed by Wyoming's only fall scrimmage

This wasn't the finished product, but it was close.

Two weeks prior to Wyoming's home opener against Montana, the Cowboys descended on Jonah Field on Saturday for their first and only scrimmage of fall camp.

And after it was over, coaches tempered their excitement with measured, cautious reminders.

We've still got work to do. We're not there yet. There were mistakes, and they must be corrected.

But even so, Wyoming's most realistic preview of its Aug. 30 debut revealed more positive than negative.

“I’m not going to jump up and down, but thumbs up," Wyoming head coach Craig Bohl said. "I looked and said, ‘Hey, we’ve got work to do. We’re two weeks out. But we look a whole lot better than we did last spring, and maybe on par with where we thought we’d be.’”

Notes and Quotes: Wyoming's first and only fall scrimmage

YOUNG QUARTERBACKS

Statistically, Wyoming's two freshman quarterbacks -- Austin Fort and Nick Smith -- were impressive on Saturday. Fort finished the day 4 for 5 passing for 36 yards and ran the ball four times for 42 yards and a touchdown. Smith was 3 for 5 for 17 yards.

But because those reps were taken against Wyoming's third and fourth-team defenses, their numbers are likely inflated. Bohl said after the scrimmage that the young guys still have a ways to go.

“The younger quarterbacks, I think we’re still a work in progress there,” he said.

Freshman running back Brian Hill led the rushing game with 98 yards on seven carries and had the day’s biggest run, a 47-yarder from the offense’s one-yard line.

“I was eight yards deep in the end zone and I was like, ‘Oh my God, coach Bohl is about to kill me if I get a safety,’” Hill said. “I just trusted my footwork and, when I saw the hole, I just hit it as hard as I could and got through. It was a foot race and DeAndre (Jones) is one of the fastest guys on the team, so he caught me.”

I would be curious to know how Bohl and his staff would compare his NDSU team from last year and our team this year? Clearly, his Bison were very good last year with a great QB. From his reaction after the scrimmage he was doing all he could to contain his excitement. He had "coach speak" on full throttle. I didn't hear too much talk (positive or negative) regarding th O-line play (did I miss something??). So all in all sounds like this team is progressing nicely. For some reason, I was always skeptical when CC or Glenn talked about how well things are coming together before the season would start, but with Bohl I feel like he has a little better grasp on reality. I could be wrong.

I'm curious about his comparison too - not sure we'll ever get one but I'm dying to know.

I'd also like to hear what the players think after this camp vs. DC camp. Where they think they are compared with last year. More than just conditioning. Things like blocking scheme..easier or harder. Defense philosophy. .??

Most of the players have already expressed that on their twitter accounts and some expressed it in youtube interviews.

Former Wyoming walk-ons Simpson, Van Maanen earn scholarships

By definition, the walk-on's life is an anonymous one.

Whereas each college football team needs its stars, it also requires the silent, hard-working, invisible masses. The walk-ons do much, and ask little. They are the voluntary foot soldiers, willing to sacrifice time and health to wear a jersey and represent a school -- if only in grueling early morning practices.

The walk-on expects no reward, and usually, he isn't granted one.

But every once in a while, the tireless work pays off.

I should have said a non-pc version. The real unfiltered version of what the players think. Not necessarily what they tell media.

I think when Rufran & Olive both said they felt like they wasted the last two years it speaks volumes that this teams conditioning was pretty bad under DC. But ya I would live to hear true feelings not sugar coated.

It certainly explains a lot. I think Brett Smith only got better because he was always training and worked out with NFL QBs, though he regressed as the season went on while under DC.

Smith has alluded to his his footwork and stuff going to crap because DC kept telling him "faster faster". He knew his form was crap, but he was trying to please the coach. One season under Bohl in an offense where he had to learn to read a defense would have done wonders for him...but that's another dead horse to kick.
