Wyoming Fall Camp 2014

POSITION BATTLES

Bohl said that senior tight end J.D. Krill has looked good this week and figures to be Wyoming's starting tight end. With five other scholarship tight ends on the roster, the second tight end vacancy is still up in the air.

At fullback, running backs coach Mike Bath said redshirt freshman Drew Van Maanen has been impressive and looks like the clear No. 1 guy. Freshman walk-on Matt List has also taken steps forward in the last two days, and he seems to be progressing more quickly than the other freshmen at that position.

UW fall camp – Day 6

Wyoming’s first period of its Saturday morning practice was some 11-on-11 work.

First-year coach Craig Bohl said he often does this because it is a good — and difficult — drill for the quarterbacks because there is a lot of “chaos” going on. It allows them to think things through and prepare for what might happen in the early portions of any game. In this case, it is for the season-opener three weeks from today against Montana.

There was a good mix of the No. 1 offense vs. the No. 1 defense and twos vs. twos.

Notes and Quotes: Wyoming's Saturday morning practice

As Chicago Cubs great Ernie Banks once said:

"It's a beautiful day for a ballgame. Let's play two!"

Wyoming plans to do just that on Saturday, as it runs through its first two-a-day set of practices this fall. The Cowboys were out on Jonah Field for the majority of the morning session, practicing in shoulder pads and shorts.

Here are some observations, photos and video from the media's 30-minute access window.

Not sure how I feel about Mertens at 285 lbs and Appleby at 265 lbs. Those are the two starters at DT/NT right now. Hard to envision the defense owning the line of scrimmage being that small up front.

Mertens has always been about 285.

Wih them being that light, it's all technique and leverage...not pure mass and power. Though I'm sure Chase and Mertens have some of that power, or they wouldn't be starters.

AJ Hotchkins or however you spelled it left. Per his twitter the other day, he was homesick.
Well, that leaves us that much thinner at fullback. :?

According to reports this week, he was going to stay at Linebacker. Vorel said he's gonna go play at Blinn JC in TX.

Homesick and playing in Texas when he's from Oregon?

Wyoming Holds First Two-a-Days of Fall Camp on Saturday (WyomingAthletics)
Saturday's Two Practices Followed First Full-Padded Practice on Friday

The first week of fall football camp was completed by the Wyoming Cowboy Football team on Saturday as the Pokes had their first day of two-a-day practices. The Cowboys practiced for about two hours Saturday morning, beginning at 8:30 a.m., and were scheduled to go back to the practice field for a shorter non-padded practice at 3:30 p.m.

Head coach Craig Bohl met with the media after the morning session, and shared what he has seen so far through Wyoming's first six practices of fall camp.

"We had a half-padded practice this morning (Saturday), and today is our first day of double practices but the tempo of practice is not going to change dramatically even though we are practicing twice today," said Bohl. "There are signs of progress, which sometimes when you're in the midst of it you don't recognize it, particularly as a position coach. But myself, as a head football coach, I'm pleased.

BROTHERLY LOVE
At Wyoming, brothers Jordan, Joshua Stanton are closer than ever

Time apart brought the Stanton brothers together.

Growing up, Jordan and Joshua Stanton did what brothers do: fight, and hang out, and play sports, and keep fighting. They were best friends and bitter enemies -- usually all at once.

“Jordan was always the big brother and he bossed Joshua around, and they got into their little rivalries," their mother, Linda Stanton, said with a nostalgic laugh.
