Wyoming @ DU

Pokes always have trouble at DU. I expect the same Sunday.
Should be a tough game. But think the Pokes find a way to win. Shyatt has had success against DU. Schroyer not so much.

Go Pokes!!

I overrated DU in the preseason. I was wrong on that one as they have struggled. Always a challenge to play against that style, but we should be prepared for it.

Not much difference really. Home team has won every game in both Schroyer and Shyatts tenure (2-2 for Heath, 1-1 this time for Larry but he beat DU in Laramie in his first tenure as well.).

Pokes haven't won at DU since 2001.

Joe Scott teams always give us fits, I'd rather this was in Laramie, but if we shoot the 3 well I think this is the year we beat them by at least 10, (I hope)

I think Wyo wins it, probably in a game similar to the second SD game.
If they do blow them out though, I will be really happy.

All about how drained the team is after finals week.

Which the more I think about it, I think they should be ready to go.
Even if you have lots of finals, you are still at school a lot less than a regular school week.
Hopefully they are done already and can get back to focusing on hoops.

I can't wait to watch this game today. With the guards Wyoming has and the 2-3 employed by DU I think Wyoming wins big and makes DU change things up defensively opening up nance and cooke

This will be a close game. Denver isn't overly athletic or a great jump shooting team, but their offensive system can wear defenses down. They rely on a lot of cuts and screens and look to take advantage of any defensive lapses. Wyoming needs to be prepared to play defense for the entire 35 second shot clock. Denver's strength on the offensive end is their vision and passing. When a player gets in position for a high percentage shot, they rarely miss him. I expect Shyatt to look to push the ball in transition in hopes of creating offense before Denver can settle into their 2-3 zone on defense.

Player to Watch: Chris Udofia (F, 6'6, 200 lbs, Sr.)
Udofia is a very well rounded player. They look to him often in the low post, where he does his best work. He's great at finishing through contact down low. The most impressive thing about him is his excellent court vision. He's a great passer for his size and has a knack for finding open teammates on the perimeter or cutting to the basket. Good things happen when the ball is in his hands. We really didn't have an answer for him last year, as he dropped 26 points on us before fouling out. I would consider fronting him in the post to try to keep the ball out of his hands as much as possible.

Denver has underperformed for much of the season, but looked much better in their last outing at CSU. Wyoming is a better basketball team and should win this game, but a win is far from a certainty. These are the types of games we can't afford to drop if we want a serious shot at making the NIT tournament this year. I would look to establish Nance early and often. While Udofia is a pretty good shot blocker, he also prone to committing fouls. If we can get him in foul trouble early, things will be a little bit easier with their best player off the floor. This is a big, big game tonight.

I hate that talk about "if we want to make the NIT".
We don't want to make the NIT. We want to make the Big Dance.

And Wyo lately has been giving up tons of 3's. I hope Shyatt has addressed that over this off week.

I want Wyo to continue to push the ball and run DU out of their own gym, and hopefully contest every 3 point shot.
Big stretch for Wyo with this game @DU, then the home games vs. SMU, then 2 days later at home against NC on a Sunday.

It's that time of the school year where Laramie is empty, and the players just went through finals week as well.
They are tired, and will probably want to go home for X-Mas.

They need to take care of all 3 of these games.

Wyo wins tonight after pulling away in the 2nd half, 72-59

I"m very curious about this game. Would go, but gotta shuttle Christmas shoppers.

Both CSU And Wyoming played CU tight, however UW was on the road and CSU was at home. Not that we should compare scores, but a good win on the road at DU would help a bit with RPI (Hey, it won't hurt!) and confidence closing in on the holiday break. I also hope the Pokes don't take UNC lightly. They are improved this year also.

Of course the NCAA Tournament should be the goal of the team, but realistically, the chances of that happening this season are slim. Based on our OOC schedule and relative weakness of the MWC this season, we would likely need to get to 25 wins to be considered for an at large bid. I just don't see any realistic scenario where that is the case this season. Of course, we could also get the auto bid by winning the MWC Tournament, but again, the chances of that happening seem pretty low to me.

As a fan, I would love nothing more than for the Cowboys to play well enough to make the NCAA Tournament this year. However, I personally feel that the NIT is a much more reasonable expectation for this team and believe it would be a step in the right direction.

I'm not disagreeing with you, I just always want to be in the Big Dance.

We're just over an hour away from tip-off and I am stoked!
Screw football today! Broncos lost Thursday so I don't care about the NFL today.

I'm ready for some hoops!!!

Pretty much right on. RPIForecast suggests that we would need 23 D-1 wins (25 overall) to have an RPI of 33. Unless those included wins over SDSU and UNM, the lack of quality wins would make it dicey even at that point.

Long story short, the NIT would be a nice step in the right direction. Realistically we need to go 10-8 or 11-7 in MWC play and finish no worse than 10-3 OOC to have a chance at the NIT. If we accomplished those marks, it would mark our best season since 02-03, the last time we finished above .500 in MWC play and the last time we made the NIT.

If we can build momentum with a NIT level team this year, we could be set up for a run at a tourney berth next year with a very veteran squad (likely 4 senior starters, plus Adams who would be a 3 year starter at that point).

Obviously a long way to go before we can even talk NIT, but today is an important step in the direction. Let's go Pokes, break the Magness Arena curse!
