Maybe but I deal with Gay students in school from time to time. Had one try to kill himself this year. The crap they take is pretty sad and the queer line was over the top when you see the pain these kids deal with from peers,

Hate to say it, but kids will find a reason to pick on a "weaker" peer no matter what the excuse. Being a homosexual often puts a big target on you, especially if you're the flamboyant type - if you're the lumberjack, no-nonsense type, though, it's not nearly as likely that anybody's going to mess with you.
As a kid, I was picked on because I was small and pale (I'm a redhead), and because my dad was a farmer (yeah, I still don't get that one), but once I hit high school I grew from 4'10 to 6'1 in about 18 months, and all of a sudden, things changed completely.
One of my best friends had my incredibly small stature as well, but nobody ever bullied him twice. He turned the table on every single kid that messed with him - I still remember a huge kid (about 6'2, 220 in 8th grade) putting him in a headlock and claiming he was going to stick him in a trashcan, only to fall down crying on the floor in a fetal position just 3 seconds later while my friend stood over him with his eyes filled with rage, calmly stating that if he ever touched him again, he'd literally rip his balls out instead of "just" punching him there.
I kinda got bullied, actually teased becaused I'm extremely jumpy, in junior high (Centennial JHS in Casper). I just ignored it at first but later went to the vice-principal and she took care of the problem for me. The funny thing is I was actually quite popular with almost eveybody back then.
Hey Okie, I was on the UM campus this morning and saw a pickup with UH plates on it.. I see Hawaii plates from time to time, but none with the UH logo on them.

Only hangup is that UH needs to win 2 more games (Fresno, Tulane and the finale vs. BYU).

Also it really doesn't matter who is in high school and when, Anyone that didn't fit in during that generation was always picked on. Gay, Skinny, Fat, Slow shit the list goes on and on while I don't condone any of it shit it's high school.
IMO if parents still had the right to discipline their children without being called being neglectful or abuse this country would be a lot better place to live in.
I can tell you from experience half the shit I see people get away with today I would have gotten a 2X6 paddle that our pastor made for my dad beaten across my ass and I never would have thought about doing it again.

As for the topic, most people I knew would have laughed it off, but you could always count on one person taking it too seriously and blow it out of proportion.
And sadly, the word "queer" used to just mean something or someone odd. Now, somehow, it's a slander against gay people. And I first learned of the word in Tom Sawyer, one of my favorite books as a kid.
