Wyoming bowl ban

I was told that the NCAA imposed a bowl ban on the 1959 Wyoming football team. They finished the season 9-1. Any idea what the infraction(s) were that resulted in the penalty?

Had to do with a recruiting rule that by today's standards was completely stupid. One of the recruits who took his allowed visit to UW decided to stay in Laramie instead of going back home after the recruiting trip was over.

Got the info from the Million Cheers book I got during the 100 years of Wyoming football thing back in 1993 (our LAST conference championship season - we had to share that title with Fresno State and the Evil Empire from Provo).

Thanks for the info! Any idea if the recruit landed in Laramie or went elsewhere?

Wyokie, you are full of knowledge!

Thank you. I just love reading about Wyoming football history. :D

Do you really need to read about it, weren't you around for most of it?

At least I remember when we actually won an OUTRIGHT Conference title and destroyed BYU on National T.V. all in 1988.

If my memory serves me well, Wyoming didn't have lights in War Memorial Stadium at the time but ESPN wanted the game so badly they brought their own lights on the back of trucks for the first night game at Wyo.

I was living behind the Zion Curtain at the time and drove from there to Laramie to watch that game.

That was a great time for UDUB sports because both football and basketball were
kicking butt.

You are correct on the lights. It was one of the very first ESPN Thursday Night College Football games ever seen.

I still remember that high arching pass by Randy Welniak that was caught in the endzone and b-y-who didn't have an idea what was going on till it was too late.

Great Memories
