Love the message from Hank.

What a journey that kid has been on.

State championships in highschool in Miami, Florida, goes to Tuscaloosa, Alabama for 2 years, now in Laramie, Wyoming for 3.

And this season is just getting going! Who knows where this is going to go!

Larry Shyatt watched the film twice.

And even though the University of Wyoming men’s basketball coach was disappointed his team lost 45-42 at California on Wednesday, he couldn’t have been more pleased with his team.

“That was the best 40 minutes of defense played by a Wyoming team since our staff returned,” said Shyatt, who returned to coach the Cowboys for the 2011-12 season after one season in 1997-98.

Cowboys survive home scare to defeat Montana State

“(Montana State) came out and smacked us in the mouth on the offensive boards, and there were some adjustments we had to make after the first half. They tore us up. We didn’t really have a response for it,” UW junior guard Josh Adams said.

“We are lucky we can learn from a win rather than a loss.”

Notes and Quotes: Wyoming 70, Montana State 61

REBOUNDING WOES

Montana State out-rebounded Wyoming 27-26 on Sunday, and there was a bigger discrepancy on the offensive glass. The Bobcats grabbed 11 offensive boards which yielded 16 second-chance points.

"There were a couple plays that, because of the hard drive, we were already in rotation or we were going for a blocked shot. If you don't get that blocked shot, that ball gets up in the air and there's nobody near him," Shyatt said. "That happened four or five key times.

"It is something we can clean up. At this time of the year, Papa Shy likes to look for things to clean up. So hopefully that will be one of them."

Vorel: Wyoming needs offensive consistency to achieve ultimate goals

Will the Cowboys score enough when it matters?

Through 11 games, Wyoming's defense has been characteristically stout, molded into a supreme strength by head coach Larry Shyatt. Seven times this season, the Cowboys' opponent has failed to reach 50 points. The quality of opponent or style of play has rarely mattered, as Wyoming has jabbed a stick into the offensive spokes of California, Colorado, Denver and Florida A&M alike.

Wyoming's Cooke focusing on strengths in senior season

Derek Cooke Jr. isn't trying to do it all.

The Wyoming senior forward's greatest strength, perhaps, is acknowledging his weaknesses. He is not a ball handler or jump shooter. His skill set cannot be confused with Riley Grabau's, or even Larry Nance Jr.'s.

That isn't to say, however, that Cooke's contributions aren't valuable. The springy 6-foot-9, 220-pound forward is a menace around the rim, employing superb bounce and athleticism to throw down emphatic one-handed dunks and swat opponents' shot attempts as if they're volleyballs.

Gagliardi column: For Cowboys basketball perimeter shooting, getting to free-throw line are key

The University of Wyoming men’s basketball team does many things well. So it is no surprise that the Cowboys are 9-2 with two nonconference games left before the Mountain West season begins Dec. 31.

UW is in the top five nationally in scoring defense (50.8 points per game). It leads the conference in assist-to-turnover ratio (plus-1.5), defensive rebounding percentage (75.6) and field-goal percentage (50.2).

But that last statistic — field-goal percentage — is misleading.

Shyatt talks free throws

“The stats I’m most comfortable with is shooting our percentage at free-throw line,” he said. “Most of all are we making more than opponent is attempting. We play a low possession game so there are less free throws for both teams. If we continue to make more (free throws) than our opponents attempt, those are two good things.”

So what's the deal with WYO-Vision not doing highlights of the games anymore. They stopped after the Regis game. No Cal or Mont st games.

Not sure. They have Cowgirl highlights through 12/12/14. Could most of their time (right now) be spent focusing on the Papa Shy Show?

Wyoming looks to learn from Montana State struggles against Southern

"Coach [Shyatt] always says, ‘Make sure you learn from games you won rather than lost.’ Fortunately, we did that," senior forward Larry Nance Jr. said. "We can’t coast, whether it’s at home or on the road, against anybody. We’re going to definitely tighten up for these next two games.”
