Ugh. Thank you Bush & Jennings!?

Never have been much a believer in ratings, offers, etc., though - as what it really boils down to is how the kid is developed and coached. I think we have a gem in the weight room for starters...

These coaches will now have 12 months or more to develop relationships with recruits in upcoming classes. If all of the coaches are as enthusiastic about UW as the newest addition, Mike Bath, then the staff should be able to haul in respectable classes moving forward. Relative to some/most coaches, Bath has been has been a tweeting maniac since accepting the UW position.

Mike Bath: It's a great day to be a #Cowboy! #GoWyo

Mike Bath: A lot of Bronco fans jumping off the boat, but a new #Cowboy jumping in!! Great nt to be a @wyo_football !!! #GoWyo #FutureIsBright

Mike Bath: Heading out to take the recruits snowmobiling... #Breathtaking #GoWyo

So we all know the star rating is bullshit, and the Super Bowl kind of proved it. There was something like 47 players in the superbowl that were 2 stars or unranked coming out of highschool.

But we at lil ole Wyoming have known that for a while.
Our biggest problem for the past 10 years has been recruiting players with no FBS offers besides Wyo.

The star rating is dumb, but there is something to be said if we are recruiting kids with no other FBS offers, but that seems to have changed. Who cares if they are being recruited by schools like Idaho and NMSU? That is something we normally don't compete with.
We just competed with 12 FBS schools over recruits, and won with those guys.

Can we never look at the star rating again, but just look at offer sheets?
If so, does this class mean this is our best recruiting class in the last 10 years?

Brett Smith probably one of the most underrated players ever. Put up incredible numbers with a bad o-line and the most predictable offense in the country. Oregon may not be kicking themselves, but the other Pacific North West schools probably have been the last few years.

If you don't think at least Rivals' stars are BS, consider that all most our guys are rated two stars yet rivals only has film of ONE of them, Vega. So what exactly are the stars based on? Offer lists much better indicator.

Our biggest problem is not that we've recruited players with no other FBS offers. Our biggest problem is that our coaches have failed to develop and teach those players to play beyond what has initially been thought of them as young, underdeveloped young men.

Found this on another board. They broke down the stars for all of the Super Bowl roster players when they came out of high shcool.
125 total players on the two rosters.

5-stars: 4
4-stars: 20
3-stars: 34
2-stars: 26
0-stars: 21
N/A : 20

Completely agree. Development is huge....and that starts in the weight room. I think the new training program is going to pay off big time in the years to come.

Wick said that the new weight training program is way better and a lot harder.
They have these new machines that weigh you, tell you how much of your weight is fat, and how much is muscle, so that's pretty damn cool. So they are getting exact with the stuff, and turning it into a science instead of just "go and lift".

This is a nice breakdown. Very interesting. I'm sure Coach Bohl would smile and wink at these numbers based on his sentiments regarding the rating systems. Time to have patience and let the staff build this program around their tried-and-true template ("recipe"). Hand the kids over to Duval and see what develops.

I agree that we need to develop players, and the coaches haven't been good at that in the last decade, but at the same time we can't be expecting coaches to develop a team of FCS-offer players into MWC champions. We don't need 5 stars, or blue-chips, but we need some players that are at least being looked at by other FBS teams.
If no other FBS coaches are taking a chance on them, then that means over 120 other teams don't think that player is talented enough to be developed into a legit FBS player.

We shouldn't worry about the star rating, but we shouldn't just assume we can develop an entire team of players who aren't good enough to play D1.

Because every FBS school looks at every recruit out there and scouts the entire country.

You're missing my point.

To think that this staff can turn every no name high school football player into MWC champs is ridiculous.
The players need to be good to start with.
Real life isn't a movie where the bench warmers come together as a team and win championships.

The staff will surely turn good players into better players, but if the initial abilities of the players didn't mean ANYTHING, then why not just recruit a team full of Laramie, Cheyenne, Casper, Gillette, Rock Springs, Green River, and Evanston players?

Being able to develop talent means they have an eye for talent to begin with.

Reading this thread makes it sound like getting 3+ star recruits to Laramie, WY is easy and that it's just something our previous coaches neglected to do. Wyoming is the perpetual underdog and that is even more true in recruiting than anything else we do. If all of our coaches spent all of their recruiting time on kids with tons of other FBS offers, we would still end up losing out on the vast majority of them. Sounds defeatist, but it's the truth. Until we start consistently winning games, Laramie is only appealing to guys used to that kind of lifestyle, and guys who haven't been given a chance elsewhere (ala Brett Smith, Mitch Unrein, Devin Moore).

What I hope (and think) Bohl is doing is recruiting individuals that have a certain grit and attitude. You can't truly develop players without their buy in. Hopefully we are getting those guys with a desire to develop into a great athlete. Would it be better to already have developed, talented players with the same grit? Of course, those are the ones deciding to take their talents to better schools.

Ultimately, I'll take the less than talented guy with the necessary intangibles than a talented guy with attitude problems.

I'll say it again, craig Bohl has better wins in the last 5 seasons then wyoming did and did it with kids like the ones he is now recruiting. I would love to have two big 10 wins and the defending big 12 champions win on wyomings mantle right now.
