Wrestling: Wyoming vs OU

Wyoming Wrestlers Saddle Up and Send the Sooners Home

Another dual and another win! Wyoming is going to want that West Virginia dual back with the possibility of going 8-0 in Big 12s, but 7-1 is just as respectable. On Sunday we also honored six wrestlers for their final bout: Jared Hill, Gabe Willochell, David Saenz, Dylan Catlin, Brett McIntosh, and Jack Braman.

I am not sure who won the coin toss on Sunday but was interested to see the dual start at 157. Jared was an OU transfer to Wyoming; I am sure there was tension in the UniWyo for this match. Jared just wanted to extend his last home match by heading to SV and a famous body lock. Great win Cowboy.

Sloan Swan went down really early 6-0 and tried to storm back but came up short 9-8. That is a match Sloan would like to have back, but Riley was right there to pick the team back up with a decision victory of his own. Eddie continued his great season with a tech fall victory and then came Joey. Joey coming off injury and illness faced off against #11 DJ Parker; I knew this match could swing the dual and Joey was DOMINANT from start to finish. DJ shoved Joey at the end of the match; Joey took a long hard stare at the OU bench after his hand was raised. Carroll didn’t get a bonus point victory; I know we are all shocked, but he wrestled well and forced the bigger Mora to push a pace he couldn’t sustain.

Sefton would lose via MD but again there was a Cowboy pick up the team. Luke Willochell wouldn’t get the MD in his 8-1 decision but gave a solid thumbs down to OU after his victory. I have been told by fans that the OU fans WERE NOT fans of that....too bad. Saenz effort has been welcomed at 141 and even though he lost 7-4; he presses action and will be a landmine at Big 12s. Finally Gabe, and well, Gabe wrestled the only way Gabe knew how and to keep a guy in the match for no reason and keep us on the edge of our seats until the final whistle and a 4-2 victory.

What a dual season for the boys and a few lineup changes that never seemed to derail the team. In years past the team looked like they didn’t have a great attitude, but this team is full of attitude giving it back to teams and coaches who talk from their chairs. I loved the stare downs and thumbs downs to fire the team up and to quiet the talk from the bench.

Bonus Notes: Traven Sharon wrestled at the Rocky Mountain Collegiate Open at 125 and took 3rd place. The Cowboy Shootout may not happen due to numbers.

I realized I had neglected Coach Ashworth and Coach Heil in the graphics department, so this week they are escorting the Sooners home.

What’s Next: For the starters is Big 12s March 6-7 in Tulsa. Remember this will be streamed on ESPN+ as will the NCAA. A month subscription of ESPN+ gets you both.
