The Boys are Settling In – and Stacking Wins
Wyoming took this last week to re-adjust, and the results speak for themselves on the mat. NDSU was coming off a dual win against UVU while on a six dual winning streak; they were buzzing.
Wyoming sent out three 125s during introductions: Owens, Sefton, and Harrison. I thought Harrison was out of matches to preserve his RS, but it was Owens who made the start at 125. Wyoming guys are firing off on shots but just come up short in these matches I think one win here would go a long way at 125. Tucker would lose via TF. The Luke match started out slow, internally I thought oh man not a flat dual again, but Luke was aggressive while NDSU backed away a lot of the dual. Even Gabe, Luke’s older brother, was screaming stalling from his bike. I am not sure I have ever seen a 3-1 win where the three were: two stall points and one escape.
Saenz must have had a flip switch because he has been extremely aggressive these past two duals. The score only showed 4-1 in victory, but David pressed the action for seven minutes. Gabe might still have been mad about his brother's match, and he clubbed his opponent to set the tone. As a hockey player I loved it, but the ref was quick to have a talk with the two wrestlers. Gabe still won via tech fall. Jared would fall via MD but Swan quickly picked the team back up with his own MD. Sloan had the MD locked up late in the match and still attacked under 10 seconds to score a 14-3 victory; I loved wrestling for seven minutes.
Riley and Eddie continued their winning ways with two MDs of their own. Ladies and Gentlemen, Joey Novak is back! I thought his first match back he would play it close and grind the victory; I was wrong. Joey was aggressive from the whistle against a Top-25 opponent and would get the 8-1 victory. A month away he looked like Joey of old; the fans loved seeing him again. Carroll would get another MD but his knee seems to bother him a bit. That upcoming three-week break will go a long way for him to get right.
This is the most aggressive Wyoming team I have seen on their feet. In the past the liked control on top and back points, but these guys were firing off shots from their feet over the past two duals.
MVP: David Saenz. He wrestled two great matches this weekend. I was in town this weekend and David ran with my son in the room and wrestled with him before the dual. In doing so Jameson told his mom he doesn’t want to be a Hokie like her but a Cowboy instead. Jameson also got to meet his favorite wrestler in Sloan Swan.
What’s Next: Wyoming heads to Greely Friday to battle UNC and following that the face the Sooners on Sunday for Senior Day; PLEASE PACK UNIWYO FOR THEM! The seniors I am tacking are David Saenz, Jared Hill, and Gabe Willochel. If I miss anyone, let me know! Also, send me your favorite matches you have watched by them, and I will do a blog for it.
Wyoming created more Cowboys this weekend with the autograph lines. I want to thank the coaches, staff, and parents for giving us a great weekend in Laramie. Have a blessed week and GO POKES!
